The Honeymooners Band started as a fun project between Husband and Wife – Steve East and Jolene East. They decided they wanted to be on a “Honeymoon For Life” #HFL so they started a band with which they could do just that: tour around SA, play gigs and have a holiday at the same time. Then they dragged in a friend, Michael Eichbaum, to play the keys.
Michael is kind of like the ‘Third Wheel’, one could say. Like the plot of a Hollywood film probably starring Paul Rudd & Reese Witherspoon (as the nerdy, doting married couple) and Owen Wilson as the crazy best friend who gate-crashes the Honeymoon and gets up to ALL SORTS of shenanigans. “What a hilarious, comedy-filled ride!” – Some or other movie critic.
So is that it – the 3 of you?
Sometimes, The Honeymooners bring in an added extra buddy special guest along on stage – for example more recently at their set at STRAB 2018, they brought along Naming James frontman Jamie Acheson to strum some strings and sing some sexy harmonies. So look out exciting special guests in the future, it’s always a riot.
And, what songs do they sing?
People seem to ask this a lot. “What genre?” blah blah. Basically the worst question ever. Essentially, Steve is in a relatively well-established Alt. Country band called Crystal Park. So they sometimes do acoustic stripped-down covers of songs that Steve wrote and sings for Crystal Park. They didn’t ask permission from Crystal Park to do this, but they thought “Ag, Steve is in the band… sure it’s fine, right?” This makes gigs particularly interesting, as sometimes you can hear Crystal Park band members in the back of the crowd exclaiming “That’s off key!” or “Is that the best you can do?” and throwing empty soup cans at the stage, and the like.
Jolene is from a band called The Mitten Fits. She plays Ukulele and has a voice from the Heavens. She has been playing and writing her own songs for about the past 5 years, so they perform some of her original songs as well. Jolene is in the process of recording her own solo album as well, so look out for that.
Then there’s the cover songs. The Honeymooners try add some cool covers to their set from bands all 3 of them love – Johnny Cash, Bright Eyes, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Richmond Fontaine, Leonard Cohen and many more. Just cool songs they love to play and give their own little spin to. Where do they play Wherever you want, baby. Wherever you want. How can we book the band?
Interview: The Honeymooners
MA: Hello guys, its really cool to be chatting, how you doing today?
Hello! We are doing fabulous, thank you for chatting with us.
MA: Please give us a quick 101 on who The Honeymooners are? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
The Honeymooners are husband and wife team Steve East (vocals, guitars, bass, kick drum) & Jolene East (vocals, ukulele, shakers) as well as Michael Eichbaum (on keys). We have all been involved in the music scene collectively for almost 30 years – Jolene currently also performs under her solo project “Jolling” and Steve is the vocalist/bassist of Crystal Park. The Honeymooners is basically a “Touring/Holiday Band” concept where we get to travel and play cool shows at the same time.
MA: What are some of your musical influences?
Our repertoire ranges mostly around country/folk like Johnny Cash, Richmond Fontaine, Leonard Cohen, Bright Eyes…. but also borders on gypsy swing like the Squirrel Nut Zippers
MA: You will be playing at this year’s Capital Craft Beer Festival…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
Yeah, we are super stoked to be included on the lineup this year. We are planning some really fun versions of some of our favourite artists’ songs as well as some of Jolene’s originals and maybe one or two of Steve’s songs he usually does with Crystal Park – should be fun!
We’re mainly trying to convince Mike to lend a voice to be the 3rd Harmony in the band, so that’s going to take up quite a bit of our upcoming time – haha! But otherwise we’ve got a bunch of cool shows coming up – like the Capital Craft Beer Fest – so we’re just concentrating on putting together the best shows for peeps to enjoy.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time
No, no… thank you guys – it was an absolute pleasure!
