The Cult of Maybe is proud to present the release of Pretoria based electronic producer Buli’s latest EP, Delusions. The EP will be available as a digital release today, 10 September, for free download from his Soundcloud and Bandcamp pages. Buli is currently gaining traction in the ambient electronic and beat scene up north with rumblings across the rest of the country.
We caught up with this young man to discuss his music journey and the release of his Delusions EP, this is how it went down:
MA: Do you mind giving us a quick introduction to who Buli is, where do you come from and how did you get interested in music?
Hi I’m Buli, I am a producer based in Pretoria. I’ve always been into music since I was still young. My interest for music grew as I got older because my parents played quite a variety of different music. So I guess that piqued my interest for music
MA: You are not only a DJ but also a producer…. Where did the love for production begin?
My love for production began the first time I got FL Studio (Fruity Loops) . I just loved the idea of creating all the ideas and sounds i would hear in my head
MA: What were some of your musical influences growing up?
Hip-Hop has always been an influence. I used to listen to guys like 9th Wonder, J Dilla, Common, Mos Def, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, just to name a few. I only started listening to different genres around my early teens. I started listening to more indie stuff.
MA: How would you describe your ‘sound’?
It’s pretty hard for me to describe what i make, but if I had to give it a name I would call it electronic/ambient/experimental Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop beats will always be the foundation for all the music i make
MA: You are about to drop your latest EP, Delusions. When can we get a copy of your album and what can we expect from it?
Delusions is coming out on the 10’th September. You can get it on my bandcamp page. You can expect some hard beats, a smooth baseline and out of this world collaborations. You can expect music that is completely different from the first EP
MA: What are your thoughts on the current house/club scene?
I really wouldn’t know how to answer that, but I think right now that house music is still growing and evolving. I don’t really listen to too much club music. I wouldn’t say I’m a fan.
MA: Are there any guys in the scene that you think deserve a shoutout for the good that they do for the industry?
Yeah there’s is quite a bunch of guy. Vox Portent, Drift Prism, LEEU, Micr. Pluto, Watermark High, the whole BeatNN crew, Behr, Hawkward. The list goes on and on.
MA: Anything that you are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
Well I started working on my third ep, but I don’t really know the direction it is going in. I hope to collaborate with more people in future
