Interview: Abby Nurock

• Hey Abby, how you doing? It’s so nice to be chatting to you. Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?

I’m a Jozi girl but with half my roots and family here and the other half in Cape Town.

• What are some of your musical inspirations growing up?

I come from a family of musicians and record junkies. My mother Tessa Ziegler is a huge musical inspiration. She’s a classical guitarist and I grew up with her daily rehearsals as my soundtrack. I developed an appreciation for an acoustic sound, but primarily the importance of hard work and tenacity… Nothing happens overnight… practice practice practice!! I grew up also listening to jazz and my love for acid jazz, in particular, developed.

• How did vinyl become such an influence in you?

My mother’s first husband started up Look ‘n Listen music store in Hilbrow in the 70’s and 80’s and was responsible for importing vinyl into the country. She had some of her own tracks pressed on vinyl and I was always taught to appreciate the full and rich sound. I started collecting vinyl from a young age: hand-me-downs from grandparents and treasure hunting through antique stores. I was obsessed with the percussive tech sound of Detroit House music and started collecting music along those lines. I’ve been collecting now for 20 years and DJing on vinyl for 18 years.

• Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?

It’s a tough question – I create new highlights on a weekly basis. It’s often more about the response from the crowd than it is the gig. I’ve been lucky enough to play at many diverse gigs across the spectrum from boutique festivals to appreciative crowds in the townships. It’s all about the energy of the people. I’ve played on many incredible line-ups – opening for some of my role model DJ’s (international and local). I was also fortunate enough to be nominated twice for the Best Female DJ for the Dance Music Awards SA.

• What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?

I think SA is a leader in the music scene on a global platform. There is so much talent from a production and live act perspective. We are creating our own unique sounds and getting recognition for it!

• Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?

Black Motion are just incredible!

• You will be playing at the 100th Park Acoustics event, later this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?

I’m very excited…. as far as what to expect…  I will know on the day haha. I like to adapt to the crowd as I play, so it’s always a surprise to me as much as anyone else. I love the “live” element of vinyl. And I’m very much an ‘”on the spur of the moment” kind of person. But I do promise to get everyone dancing

• Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?

Once this crazy year is over I’m ready to take the next step in my career…. what that is, is developing on a daily basis. So let’s wait and see 😉
