Open the city is a competition powered by Vodacom, where the public gets to vote and decide which South African band will be opening for the all international line-up at Vodacom in the city this October. Rock and Indie bands from across the country were called on to enter for this “once in a career opportunity”. After a tough judging process 5 bands were selected as finalists, get involved, choose your favorite, vote and stand a chance to win one of 10 double VIP tickets.

A melodic, alternative pop-rock band based in Cape Town formed in 2007. aKING’s debut album, Dutch Courage, was released in 2008. Yielding three number one hit singles on national and campus radio stations, the album has been hailed one of the best South African rock releases of 2008, quickly reaching gold status in album sales.
Al Bairre – SMS “albairre” to 33459
Since launching at the beginning of 2012, Al Bairre, the Cape Town based five-piece symphonic indie-rock band, independently released their ‘When I Was Tall’ EP. The EP was very well received locally and internationally, with tracks being play-listed by Sydney University Radio, as well as being featured on Vodafone’s London Fashion Week video.
Aztec Saphire – SMS “aztec” to 33459
The Aztec Sapphire is a band of four members that has been going since 2010. Their songs are a narrative and contemporary comment on the everyday life and troublings of a young male residing at the southern-most tip of Africa. “Out of all the indie-esque kids floating around nowadays, these are the ones that are going to be leading the way pretty soon,” claims Texx and the City’s editor, Tecla Ciolfi.
Beatenberg – SMS “beatenb” to 33459
an incredible pop band, began in 2008. They perform the songs of their singer and guitarist, Matthew Field. Recently, Beatenberg have incorporated electronics into their music, which reflects their interest in contemporary music and musical technology. 2012 Saw Beatenberg open for The Tallest Man On Earth at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, play Rocking the Daisies, and bring them a deal with Universal Music.
Monark – SMS “monark” to 33459
MonArk formed in August 2012 when they decided they all love the idea of making popular, yet tastefully engineered music. They create pop/rock with a cinematic feel and a musical twist of realism. Their first single, ‘Smiling’, was written in November 2012 by Eugene Coetzer, the band’s vocalist, inspired by and written about the realistic, uncompromised and true battles of love. MonArk is currently working on their debut album set for release late 2013/early 2014.
