Tashy D’Agrela is one of the dopest ladies in the deep house scene at the moment, with sets all over Gauteng, rocking thousands of bums in the process! She has been rocking dance floors as DJ Tashy for some time now but when we started chatting to this talented lady, she asked if we can promote her by the name Tashy D’Agrela, giving back to her Portuguese roots. She will be the female headliner for the Trio Nova: LADIES TOUCH this coming Saturday, 30th Augusts, at Capeesh in Brooklyn Pretoria, alongside 2lani The Warrior, Soul Candi CEO Harael Salkow and a host of other talented boys & girls, who bring the heat behind the ones and twos. She sat down with us for a quick chat, this is what she has to say, hope you enjoy:
MA: Hey there, how you doing? Its awesome to be chatting to you!!
Hey Hey!!! Im all good! Thanks for having me 😀
MA: Before we get started, do you mind introducing yourself, telling us where you are from and giving us a short background on how you got started in music?
Well, Im Tashy! I come from the East of Joburg. Ive been playing for about 4/5 years in the club scene. Ive always had a passion for music and although playing an instrument was attractive, the DJ bug bit me pretty hard when I first touched vinyl! That is when my love affair with house music started and after studying sound engineering, I got a better understanding of music and all its elements. I’m a peoples person and so the idea of playing music and bringing all kinds of people together (forgetting about their problems for just one night) was fascinating to me! I began to DJ at smaller parties, events etc and slowly slowly I got picked up by a few awesome guys in the party scene and basically have never looked back! It has taken a lot of hard work and determination to get to a point where I am recognised but I do this because I love it, it’s my passion and theres no feeling like coming out of the DJ box meeting new people who thank me for making them have a joll after a hectic day!!!
MA: How would you describe your style of music?
I am pretty versatile as I play at different parties but my favourite style is the deep, melodic kind with some awesome instrumental sound! My thing is if you can hear me play and close your eyes and be taken to your favourite place, or think of your favourite person, then thats the music I want to keep playing!
MA: Where do you take inspiration from in your music?
Pretty much everywhere! I tend to listen to all kinds of genres from classical to Motown era music. I may not like every song I hear, but I am not one to judge as I believe theres a person behind that guitar riff, violin or even a crazy deep baseline, who put his/her soul and heart into producing it. But most of my inspiration comes from passion (mine, or someone else’s).
MA: What have been your biggest challenges in getting your name out their in such a competitive environment, especially as a lady in the game?
I think my biggest challenge, and still today, is that you gotta be fresh, you have to bring something different, you have to connect with the crowd… If you don’t someone else will come along and take over! I honestly believe that my name has only grown because of my dedication to DJing, I never gave up (dropping demos at clubs, networking etc). I pushed so hard because DJing is a love of mine, that I think people began to stop, listen and not have the chance to say no to me.
Being a lady in this industry for me, is not a threat. Yes, people think we need to dress a certain way, or judge us more by our appearances than our actual talent, but I have always taken the opportunity to learn and take experiences from any male DJ I have met. I don’t allow it to make me feel inferior, but I rather take something from it and learn. In fact, nowadays, I find the male DJs quite supportive and I am like the baby sister to all of them.
MA: Our local deep house music scene has been growing in such a big way lately, what do you think are the positives at the moment and the reasons for the massive new appreciation for deep house in SA??
I believe SA has got some awesome talent, I just think not everyone gets given the opportunity to showcase that! But with the amazing producers, DJs, singers etc being brought to SA at some of the most incredible events like Ultra Music Fest, H2O, Nicic Beach, The Warm Up, Truth and so many more, it has definitely opened up peoples eyes to a broader spectrum of music instead of just listening to music on a radio station. People want to see whats out there, listen to different things, experience different places and meet people of different race, backgrounds, religions etc because ultimately music does bring us altogether. I believe that, all of this is positive for SA, the people, musicians, DJs and producers.
MA: Can you give us a few of your career highlights thus far?
I would have to say playing on the main stage at Ultra Music Festival in Johannesburg in Feb 2014!!! That for me was mind blowing… So many of my favourite DJs were playing that day! A huge honour!!! 😀 H2O!!! I freaken love playing there coz it is one of the best events in SA!!! Playing before Goldfish at Nicci Beach, and when they got onto the stage they turned around and bowed!!! I was like WHHHHAAAAAAAT 😀 😀 😀 But in fact, every gig i play takes a piece of me… in the most amazing and memorable way possible!!! I still get butterflies every time… Talk about a long romance 😉
MA: What track/Album are you pumping in your car these days?
Hahaha such a variety and soooooo many but two tracks I’m loving at the moment is Sade- Flow (Bas Amro Edit) and Matthew Dekay- Fangtango.
MA: You are one of the acts playing at the Trio Nova presents: LADIES TOUCH on the 30th August… Are you excited for this and what can we expect from your set?
I can’t wait! First gig for Trio Nova and looking forward to many more. You can expect some soulful deep stuff thats gonna take you on a journey that’s slowly uplifting.

MA: Are there any other projects that you are working on that we might be interested in hearing about?
Not yet, but I am playing H2O on the 11 October for the SPCA! I love animals so that is definitely a big one for me!!! And a new concept from the geniuses at Nicci Beach have launched My Backyard on the 27 September at the Wild Waters complex and I’ll be playing with Goldfish so thats something to look forward to.
MA: Where can we follow you on social media?
MA: Finally, if you could chose just one artist, local or international, to play a 2 hour back to back set with, who would it be?
Locally, Dino Moran- I’ve always loved him! And international: So many but I do have a DJ crush on Maya Jane Coles so it would be her!
MA: Thank you so much for your time, see you at Trio Nova…
No, thank you!!! See you at Trio Nova! Cant wait
