Another one of the amazing micro breweries that will be on offer this Saturday at the Capital Craft Beer Fest 2014, is The Standeaven Breweries. This Durban based family brewery is still a very new addition to the micro brewery family in South Africa, but are definitely no push over, compared to the longer serving breweries. We managed to chat to them ahead of the festival this weekend, this is what they had to say:
THE STANDEAVEN BREWERY
MA: Good day guys… pleasure to be chatting to you. Please can you give us a quick introduction to STANDHEAVEN BREWERY, where you are from and how it all got started?
The Standeaven Brewery is a family owned brewery based in Alverstone, Durban KZN. The brewery was launched in 2012 after Shaun had returned from traveling around the world working aboard a cruise ship and seen the growing trend of smaller artisan style breweries aboard.
Once returning home, some investigations where done and recipes started to develop leading us to what we are today.
MA: What are the beers you offer at your brewery?
We have various different beers we offer and are always testing and experimenting. Some of the beers we will be offering at Capital are Lager X, Best Black Gold, Bohemian Pilsner and 3 Hop IPA to name few.
MA: What have been some of the major challenges for your brewery over the years?
Being a fairly young brewery we have had our fair share of challenges as we are still constantly learning everyday. At first it was educating the consumer, as there been the broad based exposure craft/micro brewed beer we see today. Other challenges include availability of various ingredients for brewing, there cost and the challenge to try make craft an affordable product.
MA: Micro Breweries and locally made beer is fast becoming in demand and highly attractive. How have you seen the change in mindset of local South Africans over the years?
Yes, people are a lot more open to try something different where as before it was just too outrageous for most palates.
MA: You will be at the CAPITAL CRAFT FEST 2014 in Pretoria, are you guys excited for this?
Always…love the setting, the people, the vibe and the great team who make it all happen.
MA: Thanks you for your time…. and your patience
