Artist: Audrey Anderson
WHAT IS (ARE? WHO KNOWS) #DRAWINGROOMS?
Drawingrooms is a series of secret one-night-only crowdfunded art exhibitions in the homes of fans.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
40 fans have to pledge R100 each in order for the exhibition to take place.
Each person who pledges will get a limited edition hand-made postcard by the artist mailed to him or her prior to the event.
All the money from the pledges will go into a “pot” and one lucky attendee’s name will be drawn at the end of the night. That person will get to select one piece of art on exhibition, or a collection of artworks, to a guaranteed minimum value of R4 000 (total amount from pledges). After the target is reached another 20 tickets will be made available to add to the pot.
When enough fans pledge the event is confirmed and 1 person will walk away with an artwork to the value of minimum R4 000.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE ARTIST?
It’s an amazing opportunity to connect directly with your community of fans and buyers.
Because of the crowdfunding aspect you are guaranteed of one sale worth at least R4000 even before one picture is hung on the wall as well as at least 40 eager guests coming to your exhibition. And eager people who are already interested in your art are also likely to buy work on the night.
No more sitting with the stress of production or framing costs and not knowing if you’re going to make it back.
I’M AN ARTIST. WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Connect with your fans on social media, email, real world, everywhere! Tell them about the exhibition and get them as excited as you are. They already love what you do so it really is about engagement and not begging. Nice, hey?
Oh, and you have to make 40 pretty postcards.
Each person who pledges will get a limited edition hand-made postcard by the artist.(Due to the postal strike postcards will be handed out at the event and not mailed as usual)
Please note: general ticket purchases do not come with a limited edition post card.
All the money from the pledges will go into a “pot” and one lucky attendee’s name will be drawn at the end of the night. That person will get to select one piece of art, or a collection of art works, to a guaranteed minimum value of R4 000 (total amount from pledges). The draw will take place at 21:00 and should the person who’s name is drawn not be present, they will forfeit their chance and another name will be drawn.
Works on display will be available for sale. If all pieces are sold out by 21:00 the winner will have the opportunity to commission a work from the artist to the value of the money in the “pot”.
“I like taking moments in life and recreating them as if they were frames from a comic book. I go through life as if I was in an art film, imagining what would be the best soundtrack to suit this moment. I catch a time in space, add line and colour, presenting it as a piece of a story that is still being written. Transforming real life moments into nostalgia using graphic novel styled illustrations and its associated language of introspection.
I started drawing when I was given a set of crayons, many years later I have traded my crayons in for pots of ink and I am still going. I got the degree to make it official and still keep drawing as if I am looking for a hidden treasure. My family travelled a lot so could not really say I come from anywhere else except South Africa, but now I live in Johannesburg and share a studio with a vibrant art community.
Ps: This Drawingrooms is mostly time, space, smells and sound captured at Oppikoppi. Hope you enjoy.”
