MA: Who is Shorty on Sax?

Shorty on Sax is an entertainer who fuses his talents as a classically trained pianist, saxophonist, House Dj & producer.

MA: Tell us about your journey to where you are today, a little bit of background?

I started studying classical piano at the young age of 10. I later studied classical alto Saxophone at the age of 13 until matric as a main subject in high-school. After High school I went on to study sound engineering and music production. During this time I made friends in the music production and djing scene, eventually going on to opening a Vinyl store, Dj school and recording studio in Pretoria with two of these friends. In this time worked I with numerous artists and Dj in studio and it was there that I found my love for vinyls and Djing. I found myself addicted to the underground scene of EDM and vinyl hunting. I started performing as a dj in most of the local clubs, bars and lounges capturing the attention of music lovers and was easily accepted by crowds and dance-floors in my home town Pretoria

“In 2010 I fused my passion for djing and Saxophone in my performances to create Shorty on SAX”

MA: Who are your musical influences?

My musical influences include my two music teachers Loveday and Bella, as well as greats such as Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole.

MA: How did your first ever gig go?

It when perfectly because I had been practicing for so long in my bedroom that I was so well prepared.

MA: What has you most excited about our local music industry?

Due to the World cup being here in 2010 it has shown the world that SA can cater for HUGE crowds and shows… So we have been seeing more and more international artists coming to SA which gives us, the South African musicians, the opportunity to observe and learn. Sooner rather than later our musicians and artists will be on the same performance level as any giant music performer in the world, if we not already!

MA: To date, what has been your best gig / achievement as an artist?

I think one of major achievements is probably performing and sharing the stage with people that I’ve always looked up to and grew up listening to their CDs in my car such as Dj Fresh & Euphonik as well as performing outside SA in Zambia last year.

MA: Where did the name Short on Sax originate?

In my first year of school there was another boy with the same name as me except he was the tallest in the class and I was the shortest. My teacher often used to call out our name and we would always answer and get up at the same time. This annoyed her so much, so from that point on she said to me, “you only answer to shorty” . When I started performing as a Dj, it only made sense to use the name Dj Shorty. Later when I fused the sax into my performance’s the name “Shorty on SAX” was born.
