It brought back all the memories of jamming as high schoolers in their parents’ basements. So that nostalgia, mixed with some whiskey and smokes, made for a super interesting jam session, which actually resulted in three songs – two of which will feature on TMK.
“Fortunately I record all of these sessions on my phone, because we remembered basically nothing when we left, except that I did this weird low register singing on one of the jams that I was really interested in taking further. I had come in with the vocals a bar too early, so the timing was off, but there was something about that off timing that really spoke to me. So I listened to the phone recording about a hundred times trying to figure out the different inflections I did vocally and where I started singing and really struggled with trying to make sense of it. But we eventually worked it out in studio, cutting bits here and there and eventually getting the structure down.” – Alastair Thomas.
Being a complete departure of anything the band has ever done, SHORTSTRAW describes the song being about life, love and death – quite a sombre tale, but with a sense of triumph that suits the song perfectly. The message is the classic tale of “Life is short, so live it to its fullest.“
“I think the fact that it is so different from our other work, is the reason why it’s so special to us. This album has allowed us to experiment with so many different ideas and genres, and this song is the perfect example of how different we can be in our sound. There’s a certain quirk to the lyrics, but apart from that, people may struggle to identify it as a Shortstraw song without knowing it’s us.” says Alastair.
“The video adds a sense of sombreness and triumph at the same time to the song – which is a pretty accurate description of what life is like.”
