The second last offering from the THOSE MEDDLING KIDS Collection by SHORTSTRAW, July song THE LESS WE’RE TOGETHER was written on the same night as the May release, Our Simple Minds.

“The song is about all the things you find annoying when you’re in a relationship, and how much you miss them when you aren’t together anymore. Pretty sure that’s relatable to most people.”

The song features loads of pop punk influence from bands the SHORTSTRAW members loved in high school like Blink-182 and Taking Back Sunday, tied together with a pop sensibility.

The director of the video was one of the real successes of the TMK concept – Yolande from The Brave Cartel, a production company in Cape Town, heard the band talking about the collective on Nick Hamman’s show on 5FM and got in contact with them. She put together a treatment that they loved and the rest is history!

“For me, brainstorming a music video always begins with listening to the track on repeat over the course of a day or two. The emotion of the track is always the starting point for brainstorming and for ‘The Less We’re Together’, there was definitely a strong feeling of anger, hurt and frustration.

So I thought: what would be the best way to express those feelings, get them out of our system? Smashing sh** up! Wouldn’t it be great if, instead of talking about our feelings to a therapist, we could just take out our hurt, frustrations and anger out on objects? I think it would feel pretty good.

I love dark comedy and I thought, tonally, it would really suit the feeling of the track. So there is a bit of a twist in the video: The therapist who prescribes the destruction of objects to his patients, gets a bit of his own medicine…”

Gareth Steele created the artwork for this month’s song; he is Tom’s housemate and a friend of the band. His original technique matches the song perfectly – Gareth does 3D scans of people and objects and then combines them all together to make super interesting and novel art pieces.

“It’s a piece about digital identities, the migration from nature to machine and the pastiche of being in the 21st century.” – Gareth Steele.

Also one of the TMK squad, is NICK HAMMAN, longtime friend and supporter of SHORTSTRAW. Nick is the host of a morning show on 5FM, one of South Africa’s biggest commercial radio stations. He has very kindly given SHORTSTRAW some needle time on the first Friday of every month to debut and talk about each single as they are released. As their media partner, and good chommie who supports local music, he undoubtedly deserves to be a Meddling Kid.

Listen to the latest SHORTSTRAW single from the TMK Collective every first Friday of every month at 9h20AM on Nick Hammans show on 5FM.

SHORTSTRAW is also proud to have all their music equipment provided and endorsed by TOMS. With branches around South Africa, these guys run a great ship, and help out with all Shortstraw’s instrument needs.

COMING SOON: The final TMK Release…

In August, SHORTSTRAW will be releasing the final song from the THOSE MEDDLING KIDS Collective after a year long commitment of releasing a brand new song and video on the first Friday of every month:

“This project has proven to be quite a mammoth task to juggle along with touring and our day jobs. But I don’t think it could have been more rewarding. We’ve pushed ourselves to the limits and dealt with the stress and anxiety that’s come with producing a low budget music video once a month for a song we finished recording the day before. I don’t think we’ll be doing it again any time soon, but we’ll certainly tell our grandkids about it…” – Alastair Thomas.

Be sure not to miss the final song release of THOSE MEDDLING KIDS in August!
