REEPA:

REEPA - Grietfest 2014 - Mixed Apples interview

MA:Hey there, how you doing? Its awesome to be chatting to you!! Before we get started, do you mind introducing yourself, telling us where you are from and giving us a short background on how you got started in music?

Hi there, I am fantastic as usual, thank you for asking. My name is Leonard Grove and I was born in Johannesburg. I perform under the alias Reepa represented by the reputable Science Frikshun Crew, Joburg’s leading Drum and Bass Movement, a MASSIVE driving force behind the rapidly growing scene in South Africa. I also recently teamed up with the UFDNB (Underground Frequencies) collective – bridging the connection between the Cape Town, Stellenbosch & Joburg/PTA drum&bass scene.

I’ve always known that I will be a part of the music industry in some way as I started studying music full-time at the age of 16, doing my Higher-Diploma/NQF-5 in music performance (Guitar, piano and bass), graduating with my BA Honors Music Degree from the Chester University in Guilford, London for Sound Engineering and International Music Production as well as Music Law & Contracts, Acoustics and advanced Musical Theory.

MA: How would you describe your style of music in 5 words?

Unpredictably variant structure within chaos!

MA: Where do you take inspiration from in your music?

I draw my inspiration from listening to various types of musical genres from Jazz, Funk, Blues, Trip-Hop and Classical styles to modern contemporary styles and combining these many different types of underground bass elements.

MA: Our local electronic music scene has been growing in leaps over the last few years, with some amazing international acts coming over more frequently. What has you the most excited about our local music scene?

Our scene is in such an awesome stage of its development, we constantly have new DJ’s, bringing out fresh new styles and adding to the energy, emphasizing our uniquely indifferent South African underground bass music culture.

MA: Can you give us a few of your career highlights thus far?

Well joining the Science Frikshun crew in 2012 was definitely the highlight of my career thus far, as I have had the opportunity to perform alongside acts such as:

The Prodigy, Misanthrop (GER), The Upbeats (N.Z), Dub Phizix (U.K), TC (U.K), Ed Solo (U.K), Nymfo (N.L), Anngree (RU), Heist (U.K.), Sub Zero (U.K), Grooverider (U.K), Jenna G, Funtcase (U.K), Niskerone (C.T), Hyphen (C.T), RudeOne, ALXR (C.T), Kamashe (C.T), Phaze (C.T) and countless others at events such as JoziFest, Science Frikshun, Grietfest, Synergy, Twilight and more.
