On 16 June music lovers of all ages came together in celebration of South Africa’s Youth Day at the beautiful Emmarentia Dam. As the cold snap subsided and the weather heated up for a jam packed day of entertainment hundreds began queuing from 8am to get a good spot on the green lawns.
With glorious sunshine and clear blue skies, DJ Jazzy D from JacarandaFM welcomed fans to the event as they streamed in with their picnic baskets and blankets. Brendan Peyper took to the stage as the first artist of the day and soon had everyone’s feet tapping to his famous singles such as ‘Stop, wag, bly nog ’n bietjie’ and ‘Tafelberg vir Twee’. Majozi followed and once again proved a crowd favourite when everyone sang along to his breakthrough hits ‘Fire’ and ‘Darling’, leaving the crowd wanting more.
Valiant Swart soon took everyone on a journey with his harmonica and guitar and much to the crowd’s delight, performed the golden oldie ‘Liefde By Die Dam’ after which the event was named. Several JacarandaFM MCs such as Lundi Khoisan, Cassy Clarke and Mack Rapapali kept the crowd entertained throughout the day with their charisma and witty humour between sets. All girl group Blackbyrd charmed the audience with their country style of story telling and made everyone sing-a-long at the top of their voices with covers such as Adele’s ‘Rolling In The Deep’ and ‘Hello’.
While the music festivities were in full swing, fans got to take a test drive in the latest KIA award-winning vehicles at the KIA ON TOUR activation for the chance to win a iPad mini. Much to everyone’s delight, some of the performing acts jumped in for the ride and some KIA Carpool Karaoke!
Local legendary icon, Francois van Coke was up next and captivated the audience with his rock ‘n roll stage presence and iconic classics like ‘Toe Vind Ek Jou’, his record breaking hit. Die Heuwels Fantasties followed and rocked out to thousands of dancing fans singing along to classics such as ‘Pille vir Kersfees’ and made everyone embark on a trip down nostalgia lane with their rendition of ‘Ballade vir ‘n Enkeling’.
As the sun set over Emmrentia Dam the man with the golden voice and one of the best selling artists in Afrikaans music, Theuns Jordaan, ended off this truly memorable day with thousands of fans matching him note for note as they swayed in unison to his timeless tracks. Looking out into the crowd it was clear that there really was liefde by die dam.
Ending this celebration of youth with love and generosity, attendees left behind hundreds of picnic blankets which were donated to LIEFDE WEN for the less privileged this winter and to help LIEFDE BY DIE DAM give back to the community.
