We managed to chat with two of those international DJ’s, namely QUINTIN CHRISTIAN (Live) & KRIS DAVIS. This is what they had to say:

Interview: QUINTIN CHRISTIAN

[interviews] 2 International stars - 1 Massive event - The Take Over will be rocking Truth Nightclub today!!

  • Hey Quintin, so rad to be chatting to you ahead of your trip to South Africa. Are you well?
I’m doing very well thanks, excited and humbled to be back in the motherland playing at this awesome event for a great cause,it’s very inspiring to see how this team operates!
  • Lets start off quickly with a short 101 on who Quintin Christian  is… Where do you come from? How you got started in music? How has 2016 been treating thus far?

I’m originally from South Africa, I was born a Jozi lovechild and moved to the UK when I was 19 to study music. 2016 has been amazing, I was living in Holland for a while working with a live band called Klyne, touring around Europe and USA for nearly 3 months and also building various studios around the world

  • Who/What were your biggest influences growing up? Was music a part of your life from a young age?
My influences are quite eclectic, I was really into Bob Marley from an early age and also loved stuff coming from African Dope Records then later came an obsession with Blue Six and the Glen Lewis Mid Tempo 2000 album just to mention a few,we could be here all day!

  • Besides being a DJ, we believe that you are also a super talented producer?! Is music production your first love or are you a DJ that produces?
Thank you, I’ve always wanted to be a producer, I was making beats at 14 on Fruity Loops and was collecting records and tapes from very early so I think DJing was just a natural progression. I guess I’m a producer that DJ’s
  • So you are on your way to SA for The Hill Takeover, which happens to be on our ‘heritage day’ public holiday. What have you heard of South Africa and its music scene? Have you been here before?
Yes I’ve been playing here for the last 10 years and I try come at least once a year, I’ve experienced some really incredible events like here like Truth, Chisanyama, Origin, Rooftop of Dreams, Colorbox studios and Afrika Burn. South Africa has a great music scene that is growing and is only going to get better!
  • What can we expect from your set at The Hill Takeover at the end of the month?
I’m not sure actually, super humbled to be wedged between heroes Vinny Da Vinci and the amazing Ryan Murgatroid so the heat is on, I’m going to play some new records of mine and some mid tempo throwbacks more suitable for the vibe during the day but the crowd will let us feel what to play
  • You will also be involved in the production workshop on the day. What would your 1 piece of advice be to any young producer starting out?

Believe in yourself,be original and don’t ever believe the hype

  • Anything else that you are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

I’m excited about working with some amazing people in Dubai on a festival called Sole DXB which happens in November,we also have a world class studio there which we will making some future classics from

Interview: KRIS DAVIS

[interviews] 2 International stars - 1 Massive event - The Take Over will be rocking Truth Nightclub today!!

  • Hey Chris, so rad to be chatting to you ahead of your trip to South Africa. Are you well?

Lets start off quickly with a short 101 on who Chris Davis is…

  • Where do you come from? How you got started in music? How has 2016 been treating thus far?

I grew up on a small island off the south coast of the UK called the Isle of Wight. The only two things I ever really got into where playing guitars and riding bikes. I spent most of my time trying to write songs.

  • Who/What were your biggest influences growing up? Was music a part of your life from a young age?

I would say my biggest musical influence growing up was Kurt Cobain. I discovered Nirvana at the age of 9 and immediately wanted to learn the guitar.

  • Besides being a DJ, we believe that you are also a super talented producer?! Is music production your first love or are you a DJ that produces?

I really like the art and craft of both disciplines. They are two different skills that really go hand in hand. Learning one makes you better at the other.

  • Your first EP, Closer, on Subjekt Recordings in 2014, was a real showstopper and put your name on the map in the underground scene. Was this EP one of your favourites to date?

It was an exciting time for me and a real eye opener as to how the industry works. I’m always thankful to Subjekt for that EP and their continuing support.

I have never been to South Africa, so i’m very excited to visit. One of my favourite artists right now (Culoe de song) is from here. His album really sets a vibe for me, it will be cool to see if this is a common style of music here.

  • You will also be involved in the production workshop on the day. What would your 1 piece of advice be to any young producer starting out?

I would say to new starters to never give up. Learn as much as you can. You can only get better. To have tools and endless information available via Youtube is a blessing. Try to spend time learning every week as you will only benefit.

  • Anything else that you are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

I’m currently looking to slow my releases down so I can work on an album.

  • Where can we follow you on Social media?

My mainstay on social media is Soundcloud.

  • Thanks for your time guys…!!
