Playing a great combination of Blues, Rock and Americana with undertones rooted in African and European Folk music, Vagabond King is the stage name of South-African-born vocal power house and guitarist Jose Bezuidenhout. Giving up his permanent residence in the spring of 2015, Jose has been on a never ending tour.
Bezuidenhout is well-experienced having fronted and composed for various bands in South Africa while playing across all provinces and platforms. Jose has crafted Vagabond King vividly… a true example of the utter brilliance of South African independent music scene.
“I feel Home on the road and the love you get from performing to new people is overwhelming, knowing well you will be coming back around the same way again to play to old friends.” – Vagabond King
Interview: Vagabond King
MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of Vagabond King and tell us everyones role in the band?
Hi, I am Jose Bezuidehout and I am the Vagabond King solo artist
MA: Can you give us a short background on the name Vagabond King?
I chose the name as I am currently just traveling and I still live like a king.
MA: Where do you guys take inspiration from in your “sound”?
I listen to a vast range of music and love blues.
MA: Care to share some of the best moments as a band over the past few years?
Vagabond King is a new name I am playing under so opening for Mathew Mole yesterday to a crowd of 2500 strong and experiencing that energy, that was amazing.
MA: What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?
We need a bigger platform and more dedicated radio stations that promote local music not just the commercial sounds but other genres as well . . . TuksFM fucked up since they don’t even list bands on there gig guide that are not play listed with them.
MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
Loads and I keep meeting new ones but I have deep love for Hoot n Annie and Down South and not to forget the Hamonicane from Bloem – he is crazy on a harp.
MA: The Nice Guy Sessions is a brand new concept taking place at the Cowhouse Market in PTA. You guys will be performing at The Nice Guy Sessions on the 14th April. Are you excited for this event?? What can we expect from your set on the day?
Very excited to be playing at The Nice Guy Sessions – looking forward to meeting old and new fans – so come join us for some great music on the day!
MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
I have my First EP with 8 tracks that I am selling out of hand and will be looking at releasing a music video for one of the songs before I hit Strab this year.
MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?
