Interview: Avi Subban
MA: Hey dude, rad to be chatting, how you doing?
Hey Nelson, likewise. I’ve been very busy but great thank you.
MA: Let’s start with a quick 101 on who Avi Subban, the musician, is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
I am a 24-year-old Electronic Music Producer & DJ. I’ve played at clubs, parties, and festivals all around the country, as well as released on 12 labels locally and internationally.
I am from Johannesburg. I got started in the industry by releasing a 6 track EP called “Metanoia Awakenings” on Deepstitched Records with 2Lani The Warrior. After that, I released a single with Jullian Gomes & Kid Fonque on Stay True Sounds, and from there I kept working hard and made it here.
MA: What/Who have been some of your local & international musical influences?
I’m always listening to many genres and recently I’ve been listening to a contrast of Lounge/Downtempo/Broken beats and Techno. Some downtempo artists like Alampa, Estray and Lukas Endhardt have been making amazing music. As for Techno, Heiko Laux, Llario Alicante, and Norbak are the top 3 for me at the moment.
MA: What are some of your major highlights in your musical career thus far?
Definitely playing alongside internationals like Black Loops, Stimming, and Sebastian Leger. Opening the Ultra Resistance Stage in JHB this year was a great accomplishment. Working with friendly promoters and like-minded artists is always the cherry on the cake.
There is a lot of talent out there musically, however, education is fundamental to move forward and grow, and it must be done daily. There are a lot of parties from abroad and locally that are making the scene extremely exciting to be in. I believe the more musically inclined promoters we have in the industry that are throwing events for the education of music, the better our scene, audience and overall culture will become.
MA: Any acts/artists/venue/events production that you think need a special mention?
Grand & Craig Van Rensburg (Sound Sensible) are 2 of my current favourite DJ’s at the moment, individually and as a pair. We House Sunday is a party in Cape Town that has the best atmosphere, hands down. ToyToy and And club have been my escape to listen to good underground music.
MA: You are playing at Trio Nova FUSION this weekend, are you excited for this gig? What can we expect from your set this Saturday?
I’m very excited as it’s my first time. You can expect some unreleased goodies, some familiar songs of mine and also a new side to my sound that is a lot more upbeat and energetic.
There is quite a list hahaha:
• I’m releasing a 3 track EP called “Guilty Pleasures” with Kid Fonque on Stay True Sounds, end of June.
• 8 Track EP with Suid Tronica Records, which is still in the process of being completed. You can expect that in late July. I have my friend Nixxie from Greece doing a remix as well as 2 local heavyweights.
• I have a collaboration with !Sooks coming out on the House Africa Album.
• A remix for Messive Musik, coming out on the Ambious Records in Cape Town.
• A collaboration with my good friends Weston & Engine.
• A collaboration with Jelly For The babies.
• The final work on my debut album. No dates have been confirmed for now but more news will unravel.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time
Thank you, Nelson.
