MA: Tell us about your journey to where you are today, a little bit of background on how you got started in music/DJing?

I think it’s a family thing, as my dad is a sound techy and two of my cousins are very much into music themselves. I’ve always been into the lesser known styles of music, starting with Underground Hip-Hop until I found my love, House music.

Since I discovered the brighter side of music I have been collecting, amounting to a very nice collection. For many, many years I just collected and never took interest in DJ’ing much, until my one cousin, who is a very good DJ himself, attempted teaching me to play but I was happy to just supply him with the music. Simply sitting back and enjoy listening to him mix.

The revolution came in mid 2012 , when my musical partner and long time mate, Renato Rodrigues, who I hadn’t seen in a while, invited me over to his place. After showing him my music collection he advised me to start playing considering my collection was good and rare, best advice I ever took. His guidance and support together with my great love and passion, got me to where I am today.

MA: Can you please explain to us the meaning behind the name Tin Haus?

This was coined by Renato, the Tin comes from my name, JusTIN… as for the Haus, it’s ‘German’, it’s what I play and as we all know, the Germans contribute a large part to the music we love!

MA: What are some of your influences and inspirations in your style of music?

Emotions are always a big part of what I look for in music and I really enjoy instrumental stuff, as I feel it conveys a story better. I love deeeep draggy basslines with ‘weird/unusual’ sounds. Great percussive work also hits the spot very often, someone like Moomin has me in love with multi-hats, he’s got amounts of skill. I enjoy the guys who do what they want and tell you a story of their life through their music… Iron Curtis, Jimpster, Marc Romboy, David August, Addex, Evren Ulusoy are just some of the many reasons I fell in love with this great music.

MA: What has you most excited about the local music scene in SA at the moment?

I think the influx of great up & coming and not fully discovered talent we have in our underground music scene coming through more and more, whether it be DJ/producers like Nuno Estevez, Throne Miller, August O, Shel’O, Sound Sensible, Renato Rodrigues or movements/events like Toy Toy, Deep Town, Our very own Signature or In-house sessions… It gives me hope that we have a bright musical future ahead of us and there are still people out there that put love and passion into music. They just gota keep on pushing!

MA: What do you enjoy the most playing for house lovers in the country?

The reactions, appreciation and interest.

MA: To date, what has been your best achievement as a DJ?

I would have to say playing along side Jesus Gonsev and Jesus Pablo!!

MA: Is there anything else you are working on that we would be interested in?

Well I’ve recently invested in a new Mac, so I will be working on a lot of my own productions this year…

MA: Any big events you wish to play at in 2014?

I’ve heard Eric Volta will be playing in middle Feb, that would be a lovely line-up to feature on. Otherwise not really, would be fun to play at Truth though…

MA: Where can people follow you?

Facebook: Tinhaus (one word)
Soundcloud: Tin Haus

MA: Lastly, if you could play at any festival in the world, where would that be?

Dimensions Festival, Croatia. Without a doubt.
