[interview] The Lectric Monks - Drops latest EP, called The Six

THE LECTRIC MONKS drops latest EP, entitled THE SIX, coming after the release of their first single from the EP, ‘New Man’ earlier this year.

The EP has been in development by the band over the course of the last two years, meticulously thinking through all the pre-production work until they believed that the essence of the music was captured. The EP was recorded at Audio Culture in December 2017 with Jaco Naudè, with the band, Gary Peacock and Francois van der Merwe at the realm of production.

THE LECTRIC MONKS are always challenging themselves to constantly find new inspiration. Their original material lent towards Folk-Blues, after which they were absorbed by Rootsy-tootsy Rock ’n Roll. The New EP still acknowledges their old roots for existing fans, but also explores the world of funk and psychedelic surf.

They chose the title ‘THE SIX’ for the new EP for various reasons: 6 is a cosmic number, it’s the number of Gaia (Mother Earth) and also is considered the most harmonious of all single-digit numbers. 6 Monks, 6 Tracks. 6 = 1+2+3 Quick Math! One concept… many meanings. With their debut EP being an energetic dose of multiple genres and themes, THE MONKS don’t conform to anything in particular, but believe anything is possible, as long as it is about the ‘Gruuv’, always and infinitely.

MA: Hey guys, rad to be chatting, how you doing?

Hi Mixed Apples, It’s great to chat with you guys again.  Excitement is in the air, so we are doing pretty above average!

MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who THE LECTRIC MONKS is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?

The Monks Order:
Francois vd Merwe aka Francois on guitar and vocals
Gary Peacock aka F#ck’n Gary on harp and vocals
Henk Oosthuisen aka Peggy Sue on guitar and vocals
Cynthia vd Mescht aka Synth on keys and vocal
Dylan du Toit aka Penesilin on bass
Duncan Potgieter aka Funk’n Dunc’n on drums

Origin: 25.7479° S, 28.2293° E (Pretoria!)

The story of the Monks started on the couch with an acoustic guitar, a harp and scribblings on a piece of paper.  After winning a karaoke competition, on the 1st of November 2014, we got the opportunity to open for Die Heuwels Fantasties - signifying the start of The Lectric Monks. Over the years we have been through some changes, and developed into the pure Monks we are today.

MA: What are some of your musical influences?

There is nothing specific that we listen to, but there is one theme in The Monk Order: Gruuv!  It doesn’t matter what notes you choose, or how you combine them, as long as they work in harmony with the groove, we love it. This can be noted in the diversity of what we do. #lectriclove

MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?

I think the scene is bursting with talent and possibilities. It’s our time to do something as musicians and industry professionals to change the way we think about this industry as a whole and work together to develop it even further.

MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?

Femi Koya is at the top of our list. So much so, we had to collaborate with him on 1.5 of the tracks on the new EP.  Other mentions: Stones and Gold, Adele Nqueto, Orion Sky, Urban Village, Go Barefoot, Foxtrot, BCUC, Johnny Cradle, Hellcats, Okayyy… There are too many to name.  This industry is full of great people who also happen to be great musicians.

MA: You will be releasing your debut EP, called The Six, on 9th March… What can we expect from your debut EP?

A pinch of phychadelic, a dash of Roots, a measure of Rock ‘n Roll, a fist full of Funk topped with a whole lot of gruuv! This results in an explosion of cosmic flavour.

MA: Where can ppl get their hands on your EP?

It is available on most online platforms, but when you come to our shows, you can buy a special edition with a bonus track, only available on hardcopy.

MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?

The Lectric Monks have come to appreciate the importance of a well-executed stage production, and intend on making every live show a true 4d experience.  There is also new material with even more zest in the works.
