[interview] The Ceramics - Park Acoustics Sunday 27th August

Park Acoustics is coming back this weekend with our all time favourite band, Shortstraw, performing as the headliner, alongside some other excellent local bands. One of these rad bands is The Ceramics, who are a Indie Rock band from JHB, keen to make you dance this Sunday. Lets get to know these guys with a short interview:

We’re a four piece indie rock band from Johannesburg South Africa , making music for the sole purpose of making you dance and feel as if you’re getting a personal hug from our music, we really are just 4 young people enjoying playing music, meeting new people and making friends, you can never have too many friends.

We’ve had the pleasure of playing at all of the major venues in Johannesburg and Pretoria and hope to take our journey all over the world

Our biggest achievement to date is playing Lush Festival, being announced in the lineup for Woodstock 2016 , opening for Gangs Of Ballet, playing Shorstraws Booshie Nights, appearing on Balcony Tv and opening for Francois Van Coke

MA: Hi guys… nice to be chatting to you. Everyone good?

Thank you so much for having us, we’re all rad thanks!

MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of The Ceramics & where in SA are you guys from?

Sure, we have Ricky Chasumba, guitar and main vocals, Tess Petersen, bass and backing vocals, Ben Chuvali on drums and backing vocals and Shane Setowski on lead guitar, we’re pretty much all in the east rand a part from Ben who stays in Sandton.

MA: How/Where did you guys meet up to form the band?

It was a mix between our varsity circle and social circle, we actually had a show 3 weeks after we formally started to band so it was a busy 3 weeks getting a set list together and we kinda realized that we enjoyed playing shows and decided to make it a constant thing , this was about 2 years ago.

MA: Can you give us a short background on the name The Ceramics?

The Ceramics stems from a love of history and how the artwork made from ceramic withstood the test of time in all major dynasties, so we wanted our music to reflect pretty artwork and also stand the test of time, so we hope haha.

MA: Where do you guys take inspiration from in your “sound”?

Our sound is a grungier take on indie rock/pop, I mean we’re all big fans of Two Door Cinema Club, Artic Monkeys and Shortstraw, so I guess you could say we’re the love child of those influences but yea our sound really does reflect our own personal music taste and we bring that together to make our tunes, we were once compared to a Japanese punk band, so that was cool.

MA: Our local scene has been growing positively over the past few years… What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?

Yeah, that is really true, it’s great to see people take an interest in going out to shows. Well being such a young band, it really pens your eyes to the value of friendships between bands and artists, the sense of togetherness is really cool, it seems as though the barrier of fan and musician do not exist, which is what we love, the connection you get from the people who watch your shows is incredible.

We would definitely like to see more major platforms giving young promising bands a platform to expose themselves to the market, we’re extremely lucky to have gained that experience but it would be great to see it happen across the board, there are so many incredible young bands out there.

MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?

There are so many, I mean there’s bands like The Lebowski, The Dead Trends and Above Atlas who we’ve had the pleasure of gigging together and forming great bonds through our love of music and they’re super talented musicians.

MA: You guys are playing at Park Acoustics this month…. Are you excited for your gig at Parks on Sunday 27th August? What can we expect from your set?

We’re beyond stoked, it’s been up there as one of our most desired shows on our check list, the line up itself is so great and we are honored to be a part of it. We’re definitely going to be bringing the groove , we love to party and you’ll definitely get that vibe, partying, rainbows and immense energy.

MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

We’ve een in studio lately recording the last few songs for our debut E.P , the one song ‘ Be Together ‘ has been on Tuks Fm , like number 2 on the top 30 charts which is rad.
