Sutherland is an Indie folk band based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Current Members: Misty | Chris | Ren
Misty, Mika and Chris decided to start Sutherland after a fun jam down at the local park. They came up with some pretty cool ideas and then decided to make something out of it. Sutherland was officially started in 2013.
We caught up with the band to discuss the release of their latest EP, Rainmaker, as well as 2018 in general. Check what they had to say:
MA: Hello gents, great to be chatting to you guys, how you doing?
Hey hey! yeah, Thanks for taking the time to chat to us. We’re just dandy thanks!
MA: Can we start off with a quick 101 on who SUTHERLAND are, where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
The 101 on Sutherland? We’re from the 011… (JHB obviously). We’ve all been in the music scene for years now and we got started playing in much much heavier bands. It’s been quite the journey.
MA: What are some of your musical influences as a band?
Geeez, That’s a tough one. We draw influence from so many artists across all genres but the top few at moment would be Glass Animals, City and Colour, Jungle, Portugal the Man. We may not sound much like any of them but they definitely influence the way we see music in a big way.
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
Major highlights of our careers would definitely be some of the major festivals we’ve played and the experiences that have come with that. Oh, Also, we’re really proud to have had 3 singles releases in 2018 reach no.1 on the 5fm indie top 10@10. Especially considering we were really doubful that our music would ever even make it to radio in SA.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
I think it’s really only getting better on the grander scheme of things. There are so many artists from our beautiful country that are doing AMAZING things and really putting SA on the map worldwide. That alone is a huge step in exposing more of the people of South Africa to live music and making them want to get involved.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Jeremy Loops, Matthew Mole, Goodluck, Goldfish, Diamond Thug, Majozi and Shortstraw to name but a few.
MA: You have just released your latest EP, Rainmaker. What can we expect from tis EP? Where can people get their hands on a copy of the EP?
People can expect a Journey. Going through loads of different feelings and vibes I think there is something in this EP that anyone can relate to and appreciate. ‘Rainmaker’ can be found on Spotify, Deezer. Apple Music and all ther other streaming servicees out there.
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
We’re always writing new music… so there’s going to be something great coming in 2019. <3
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time!
Absolutely any time! Thanks and have the best festive season!
