Catch Strait Jacket, a talented 4-piece funk band from Benoni rocking the stage this weekend at the first Park Acoustics event of 2017, filled with some truly amazing SA acts. We got to chat with the guys from Strait Jacket, this is what they had to say:

Strait-Jackal..emerging from the streets and mullets of Benoni.. creating noise and funkin groovin since the winter of 2013

They achieve this by using a unique blend of hitting drums, fingering and plucking guitars, bitch splappin and blappin bass guitar and running their mouths off into microphones..

Since then Strait-Jackal have shared the stage with some of South Africa’s greats, like The Black Cat Bones, ShadowClub, Crash Car Burn, December Streets, Bittereinder and The Kiffness to name a few as well as gracing some of the best venues on offer!!

MA: Hi guys… it is such a pleasure to be featuring you guys on the site!! Is everyone doing well today?

Thanks for having us !  Yea we all good cant complain.

MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of Strait Jackal, tell us who plays what part in the band and also a short background on how you guys met to form Strait Jackal?

Josh (slosh) – Singer/guitarist
Clark (uncle) – Guitarist/singer
Casey (sassy) – Bass
Craig (chetty) – Percussion

Well we were all in high school together, but only after the apocalyptic hang over that Oppikoppi Sweet Thing left us with did Josh and Clark decide to start a band and that is essentially how Strait-Jackal came to be.

MA: Can you give us a short background on the name Strait Jackal?

It was a choice between Fish n Ships, Domestic Violins, Kalahari Dessert Bandits and Strait-Jackal, and by the time we had our first gig lined up we still hadn’t made up our minds, so we left it to the organizer (Jolene Holder at Rockford Media) to choose her favourite and we have been Strait-Jackal ever since.

MA Where do you guys take inspiration from in your “sound”?

Snarky Puppy, Vulfpeck, Tatran, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Arctic Monkeys, Incubus.

MA What have been some of your highlights at a band thus far?

Oppikoppi last year was definitely one of the craziest parties we have ever had.

MA: What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?

Its epic ! There are so many awesome bands and venues out there, we really are spoilt for choice and we urge people to keep going to the gigs and the festivals, its the only way it will get better.

MA Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?

Scarlotte Will, Pollinator, Stones & Gold, Hellcats, New Academics, Sannie Fox, Sol Gems, We are Charlie, KOI and so many more…..

MA: You will be jamming at the first Park Acoustics event of the year, alongside Francois van Coke, Rambling Bones, Boxer and more… are you excited for this gig? What can we expect from you guys come the 5th Feb??

Excited is the understatement of the century ! You can expect a big ol serving of Funkberry Pie !

MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

On the 30th of January we will be releasing a new single “The Evidence is Evident”, we also have a music video in the works and a full album on its way. 2017 is also the year we finally take to the road. A tour with our friends Scarlotte Will and Stones & Gold is definitely on the cards.

MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?
