#sozlol ?? Who are these lovely ladies? All we know, is that they play some rad tunes 😀 Lets get to know them…
- Hello there, how is everyone doing today?
We’re super rad, thanks!
- Before we get started, can you please give us a short 101 on who #sozlol is?
Firstly, it’s #sozlol (with the hashtag please), and we’ve been called many names, but actually it’s Catherine Grenfell and Vicky Jankiewicz and we’re teaming up to bring you songs you can dance, sing and even scream to.
Last year we were at a festival (as we do), enjoying the late night DJ bar sets and we just started chatting while dancing and joked about TOTES DJing together. Unfortunately life was a bit wack at that stage, but whenever we could, we would play off our phones at The Good Luck Bar if they didn’t book a DJ after some of the live events. We officially got booked to play at the infamous 90s Party at GLB and we DJ’ed so hard that someone almost broke their ankle (sorry!). Recently, we DJ’ed at Hells Kitchen in Melville and someone also hurt themselves because the boogie was just too strong. Our next event is a private 33rd Birthday Party and the guy is already in a moon-boot so hopefully nobody gets hurt at this one.
- Can you give us a short background on the name #sozlol?
The real story is Catherine made shirts for some of our friends to wear at OppiKoppi #OK23MangoPicker and we could all pick a word that must be on a shirt. She picked JIRRE and I picked JISSIS and when we officially got booked to play at GLB, we decided we already have the shirts so let’s call ourselves that. Obviously we knew that the name won’t be a winner at all events, so we used one of Vicky’s favourite things to say, and that’s how #sozlol was born.
- Where do you take inspiration from in your “sound”?
We haven’t mixed any of our own original songs as yet. We are basically your favourite Wedding DJs – we play all those tracks that you can lose it to – be it 90s rock, 80s disco, Hip Hop, South African tracks, and we are also stout for some rap or R&B love songs.
- What have been some of your musical highlights thus far?
Every show we get booked for is a highlight! But we have always loved Mieliepop Festival a lot, so the fact that we have a slot to play at this amazing festival is one of our highlights of 2018 so far.
- What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?
The future of festivals and events are smaller, more intimate experiences – people don’t just wanna stand around and see the same headliners at each and every event. The local scene is at a great space now for evolving and we would love to see people experiment and do collaborations more often. Think new up-and-coming acts with more established acts: Just imagine Mango Groove doing a colab on stage with Moonga K!
- Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
We truly think that local acts in SA are making waves at the moment, and we both are very excited about The Hellcats, Moonchild, The Tazers, Retro Dizzy, Southern Wild, BCUC, Femi Koya, Urban Village and the list goes on and on…
- You guys are playing at Mieliepop this year… What can you say about this festival? Are you guys excited to be playing at this awesome event?
Mieliepop is a firm favourite festival for both of us – one can even say our friendship really blossomed there. 😉 One of the BEST boutique festivals in all of Africa (and we love our festivals). The best thing about Mieliepop Festival is everyone feels like a VIP because the whole fest is all about easy-going vibes and the amazing scenery. The acts that the festival organisers book are also always a highlight, and they make it possible for you to check out main stage and the smaller (but best) stage out at the same time.
- Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
We have some exciting projects that we are working on and a few legit events that we (and you!) can get very excited about.
- Where can we follow you on social media?
Since our name is a hashtag, it would be rad seeing YOU post about us as #sozlol when you see us live, BUT if you really wanna stalk us (also, our InstaStories are great on gig nights!), look for @cathgrenfell and @Vicky_JKWICZ.
