This Sunday is the 2nd instalment of the monthly epic outdoor day festival called Park Acoustics and the line up is incredible. Headlining this month is none other than Matthew Mole, who will be playing alongside acts like Tristen Beer, Sean Koch Trio, Josh Kempen and Alice Phoebe Lou, with DJ Half ‘n half ending off the day with some rad tunes…
We managed to have a short chat with the guys from Sean Koch Trio ahead of the event, this is what the had to say:
Howdy! Ya you too.
MA: Please would you give us a short background on your music journey? When did you start playing music? Where in SA do you come from?
I come from Kommetjie in the deep south of Cape Town. Very much influenced by the ocean and very laidback lifestyle there. Had two older brothers who always jammed guitar and my Mom had me going to guitar and piano lessons from a young age. But I really put my head down and gave a lot more energy to it when I was about 20.
MA: What are some of your music influences? Any bands or solo artists that you take inspiration from?
I would have to say reggae is my go to. It makes me feel right at home. But influences are definitely acts like The Lumineers, Milky Chance, Angus & Julia Stone and Ben Howard. As the Trio weve been super influenced by Sticky Fingers, a band killing it from Australia!
MA: What have been some of your musical highlights thus far?
Touring through Europe twice in 2016. What a trip! Haha.. Opening for a band from the UK ‘Will and the People’(who had recently come off tour opening for ‘Sticky Fingers’) they really inspired us a lot with regards to there energetic live act and there dynamics in there songs.
MA: Which city have the craziest crowds?
Well the Trio havent been to JHB so cant say yet. But after our week of shows there we will definitely weigh it up between CT and JHB. It great playing for friends and familiar faces at home but its extra special when people ar singing your songs at places far from home!
MA: What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?
I havent been on the scene for that long yet and im blown away at how much talent ive already come across in this country! I think there needs to be more opportunity for SA artists to venture to Europe even tho the currency is definitely not on our side at all! We bursting at the seams with creativity and talent we just need to get it out there more. More experimenting and appreciating music where people are doing something completely different and out the box.
MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
Looking forward to hearing Justin Beer at Park Acoustics, I saw him play a few years back and he had something really cool and different.
Also just a shout out to Jeremy Loops, one my closest mates who has been there for us every step of the way.
MA: You will be jamming at the next Park Acoustics event in Pretoria… Are you amped for this gig? What can we expect from your show?
Ya we super amped to come play Park Acoustics. It’s the perfect platform I feel for us to showcase our music in JHB with a lineup that fits. Well done! You can expect new up beat, feel good songs that we havent released or played live much at all!
MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
Yes! We are currrently working on our biggest, most exciting project to date! Since we been back from Europe we have been in studio almost everyday recording our first length album to be released towards the end of the year!
MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?
You can follow us on all the platforms at ‘seankochtrio’ ( Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Soundcloud) and can find our 5 track EP ‘Natural Projection’ on iTunes and Spotify
MA: Thanks for your time guys…!!
Anytime, thank you!
