In a world that’s filled with scepticism and seriousness to most things irrelevant, its a breath of fresh air when you come across a band that give very little shits towards seriousness. The Satanic Dagga Orgy is a band from Johannesburg that play music to make you dance and have a good time, without taking it or themselves very serious. They will be playing alongside Jack Parow, Brett Newski and many more at Park Acoustics this Sunday, we suggest you pull in for a good time. Here is a glimpse of the seriousness of this rad band:

Biography

With a name taken straight off a tabloid headline, it’s clear that Satanic Dagga Orgy don’t take themselves too seriously.

The same, however, can’t be said for their approach to music.

Drawing influence from pop music and punk rock, S.D.O’s grooving folk jams fill the space between the two extremes and get the crowd bouncing along from the first chord to the last beat of the snare.

The Orj have been described as “The Slipknot of Folk” and even “The South Park of Music” and have managed to rack up some noticeable achievements in their 2 years of existence – Oppikoppi 2015, Krank’d Up 2015, 2 EP Releases, 3 Coastal Tours and a recent Retweet by Reel Big Fish.

SDO are the 5th best band on any lineup they are added to.

  • Hi guys… how you doing on this fine morning? We are excited to be featuring you on Mixed Apples 😀
Hi There Mixed Apples, we are fine thank you for asking. We are excited to be included, but we have to mention that Golden Delicious apples can fuck right off.
  • Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of Satanic Dagga Orgy, tell us where in SA you guys come from and also give us a short background on how the band got started?
The members of SDO are:
Pete – chief beard grower and the Aragorn of our fellowship of ring (Lead Vocals)
Zam – deputy beard grower and Legolas (Lead Guitar)
Storm – junior beard grower and Gimli (Drumcussion)
Loopy – chief lip lapa officer and Frodo (Lead strange instruments and shenanigans)
Shaun – deputy lip lapa officer and Samwise (Bass)
We are actually brothers, originally from Daggafontein, who tried to start a soccer team. We were kak at soccer, so we wrote a song about it and now, 26 years later, here we are.
  • What/Who are some of your musical influences as a band?
Our influences include the droning of accounting lecturers, salad cream (NOT mayo!), playing Led Zepplin records backwards at 45 RPM, and the Ketchup Song

  • Could you give us a short background on the band’s name, Satanic Dagga Orgy?
Originally we wanted to call ourselves Just Jinjer, you know, to be edgy, but we found out that there was already a band called that, so we took inspiration from the nightly activities in Rosettenville. We could just as easily have been called Southern Suburbs Weekend.
  • What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment? Is there anything you wish to see happen differently?
The scene is very kiff at the moment, especially in Gauteng – well done Hate City and P-Town! There are truly excellent bands out there, and probably the only thing we’d want to see is less people spending hundreds of rands to watch a laptop, and more people spending less than a hundred to watch 3-4 bands. Oh, and people should bring weed to more shows, and ideally share it with us. For our glaucoma obviously.
  • Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
The Helen Zille Circus needs a special mention. We’ve seldom heard such disturbing noises. Also BOXER, The Shabs, and Grassy Spark are on heavy rotation on our record players at home.

  • You are playing at this months Park Acoustic event in Pretoria. Are you guys excited for this one? What can we expect from you set?
We are very very excited for Park Acoustics. Firstly to play in such an epic location, secondly because we may get to sample some of Jack Parow’s brandy, and thirdly because there is a real possibility of a prayer circle during our show. You can expect a bunch of half-naked soutipiele, half-drunk and fully erect. In other words – JOLTOWN!
  • Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
Yes! We are launching our new EP – ‘The Prawn Awakens’ at Rumours Rock City on 14 April – it’s Good Friday so we may actually get smited by The Mighty Smiter. Then we’re going on a ‘national’ tour from 21 April to 1 May – 11 shows in 10 days!
