[interview & mix] Midnight Machiine - Cape Town duo with mix on Ibiza Live Radio and interview.

Midnight Machiine is a duo who currently reside in Cape Town but come from Maputo, Mozambique. They were our latest act featured on our Mixed Apples Radio Show on Ibiza Live radio, which aired yesterday, Wednesday 27th July. We managed to catch up with them for a short chat, this is what the had to say:

★ Domino Effect ★ Grooverdose Records ★ ★DearDeer Records ★

MidnightMachiine is the alias of a four on four music duo, love child of Dercio Gomate and Marco Dray. Originating from Maputo Mozambique. The duo was officially formed in 2013. Since then, they have played in all the local reputable events, alongside distinguished names in both local and international scenes. They compose elegant, bass driven but groovy music, conceived to touch crowds in the deepest of places. Faithfully, smashing dance floors from mainstream to underground clubs so long as festivals. All this, giving them the sole status of an international DJ duo from Mozambique.
They are currently living in South Africa´s Mother City.

  • Hi guys… it is such a pleasure to be featuring you guys on the site!! Is everyone doing well today?

Thank you, we’re doing well ! It’s a pleasure to be releasing this mix with you.

  • Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of MIDNIGHT MACHINE and tell us where do you gents come from??

We are Marco Dray and Dércio Gomate. Born and raised in Maputo – Mozambique, but we’re currently living in the Mother City (Cape Town).

  • How/Where did you guys meet up to form this formidable partnership?

We met back in grade school in year 5 and have been close from day 1. Since then, we nurtured our passion for music, and slowly started experimenting with DJ’ing and production workstations – this was back in 2008. We used to play at the same parties and spent time at the studio together, learning the ins and outs of production. When we played back to back sets, our energy combined was strong.
After some time the sensible thing was to form a duo to start performing and producing exclusively together – here we are now !

  • Can you give us a short background on the name MIDNIGHT MACHINE?

Basically when we were still solo acts, Marco’s alias was Machiine (we really can’t remember why) and Dércio’s was miD.niG.ht – using his initials D.G to create it. So when we formed the duo we thought the names sounded cool together so viola.

  • Besides being a DJ act, are you guys involved in production?

As we mentioned previously we have been producing for a while and it’s our priority, our focus.. We plan on playing our first live set towards the end of the year, this will feature 2hrs of exclusive unreleased material that we have been working on!

  • Where do you guys take inspiration from in your “sound”?

We get inspiration in many ways, one of them being each other. However we do look up to alot of producers and try to make sure our music is on par with theirs in terms of composition and audio quality . The european scene inspires us alot, there is a lot of creative work coming out of Europe. To be specific, the scene in Berlin is very up to date and cutting edge in terms of production and performance. There is a lot we could learn from the artists there. We feel a lot of the releases coming of of that place. However we’re also inspired by every day things like nature, emotions etc.. we try to convey all of these in our sound.

  • Our local scene has been growing positively over the past few years… What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?

The scene in South Africa is very mature, there are various distinct South African sounds that have made it overseas and we feel lucky to be able to be here and absorb all this energy, we are enjoying it alot ! There’s a wide array of different sounds and enough dedicated music lovers to appreciate all that’s on offer. The crowds have alot of energy, the parties are pure quality and there are enough local acts to fill huge venues without breaking a sweat. I don’t think we would like to change anything per se, but seeing more local live acts would be cool! It’s always such a sick vibe.

  • Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?

There’s alot of talent in the scene, Weston & Engine have been consistently putting out quality releases!

  • We were very excited to be featuring you on our Radio Show on www.ibizaliveradio.com…. What can we expect from your mix?

This mix is 60 minutes of an emotional roller-coaster made up of melancholic but underground four to the floor music.

  • Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

At the moment we are working on a few projects, these include a remix for a very talented singer and Kora player from Australia – Miriam Liberman, our live show which will include a singer and obviously our productions of which we’re releasing a free track on our Soundcloud next week !
