Interview: Shotgun Tori
MA: Hey guys, its rad to be chatting to you, how is everyone doing?
Short story? We’re all good. The truth? Many long stories.
MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Shotgun Tori is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
Shotgun Tori is Tori solo, Shotgun Tori + the Hound is Tori + Fred as a duo, and Shotgun Tori + the Hounds is the full band. We make music, the seed of which is all about ‘the feels’ – the lyrics grow from our hearts, the music is moulded in our hands, and then we come together to make magic. It’s fairly awesome. I can’t speak from the perspective of a listener, but standing on the inside of this is like touching the source of all things. Maybe it’s just that we’re doing something we love, with purpose; but maybe it’s also because the music that we make is about truth and the human experience, with some foot-stamping, a little roaring, and a whole lot of sweet storytelling.
We’re from all over Johannesburg. We’ve all been around the musical block… Tori (vocals/guitar/ co-songwriter) played in a band called Left Hand Drive, waaaaaaay back when, and at the time was introduced to Fred (our lead-guitarist / producer-guy / co-songwriter) – he was playing with Mr Croxley – and they connected over a mutual love of this indie-folk music. Our bassist, Jon used to be in The Hellphones with Fred. Currently, Fred and his brother Calvin (our drummer) play together in Crystal Park. Lots of bands, gigs, touring, broken strings, broken hearts – we’ve had our toes in the music scene for over a decade.
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
So many! Particularly as individual performers. As a band though, we’re fairly new on the scene and so I’d have to say FESTIVALS! We love them. Most notably, Oppikoppi and STRAB. And gosh we are SO EXCITED about MIX FEST!
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment
There’s lots of exciting stuff brewing, it’s all about diversity and collaboration up here in Joburg currently.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Tubatsi Mpho Moloi – the man is a genius, and he’s not afraid to experiment. It’s very cool.
MA: You will be playing at MIX FEST this year, alongside some rad acts…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
SO excited. We’ll be playing mostly tracks off the new album, with some old favourites thrown in for good measure. Potentially a guest artist or two? Expect high energy, raw, barefoot connection with a sprinkling of goosebumps.
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
The season is Spring. Expect much to blossom. (insert wink emoji. insert heart emoji)
