Interview: Jerry & The Bandits
MA: Hey guys, its rad to be chatting to you, how is everyone doing?
We’re doing folking fantastic thanks!
MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Jerry & The Bandits is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
We’re a 4 piece Indie-Folk band from Jobusy, blending together the sounds of Jerry’s husky vocals, Kirstin’s bright saxophone playing, Jason’s harmonica and ukulele sounds and Geraint’s groovy basslines. We started folking things up at the end of 2013 by playing at the local markets and dingy pubs and slowly worked ourselves up to where we are now.
MA: Where did you guys meet up to form the band?
The band was formed from a previous band called “Seven Ways From Sundown” that broke up just before they were selected as finalists for a Battle of the Bands round. Jerry was the guitarist for this band at the time and asked Kirstin (the saxophonist) and two other musicians to join for the final round of the battle of the bands as a once-off show. The show ended up being such a success that the new formed group decided to stay together and rename themselves to “Jerry & The Bandits”.
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far
There’s way too many to name, we’re so thankful to be able to travel this beautiful country to weird and wonderful places we would never usually go and to meet so many interesting people. Obviously playing the legendary Oppikoppi festival is one for the books. Up The Creek and Afriski Winter Festival are highlights too and having had the opportunity to open up for Jeremy Loops and GOODLUCK before were epic!
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
South African acts at the moment are freaking amazing! It’s a pity that they don’t always get the support or recognition they deserve.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Our favourite South African acts are definitely “Georgetown” and “Bad Peter”! Besides their crazy musical talents they’re all just such nice guys.
MA: You will be playing at MIX FEST this year, alongside some rad acts…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
Whoop whoop! Of course, we’re excited, I mean have you seen the epic line-up?! Mix FM is by far our favourite radio station so we’re super honoured to be apart of the first-ever Mix Fest! You can expect us to play our usual feel-good music that will have you on your feet dancing and singing your heart out!
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
We’re really trying to work on releasing some new material. Hopefully, an EP or album will be released soon.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
Facebook: Jerry & The Bandits
MA: Thanks for your time!
