Today will see the very first Live stream from inside a helicopter, flying over the city of Pretoria, which will see talented local DJ, Marc Young, playing some of his favourite music for our entertainment. This has been a few month in the making, testing logistical obstacles and being able to keep a constant signal needed for the live stream. Marc Young has been hard at work on his brand over the past few years, coupled with great sets all over the country, he is definitely one of our top young local DJ’s.
I’ve slowly started to build a sound (while performing) that I’ve liked for a long time now and I’m thankful for the response I’m getting. The 2000’s leading up to the end of 2017 has only been the best! I CAN’T WAIT FOR THE YEAR 2018 to see what is in store !!
We caught up with Marc Young for a short chat, discussing his live stream project and his upcoming set at Trio Nova Vertigo 2.0. See what he had to say here:
Interview: Marc Young
MA: Hey dude, rad to be chatting to you again, how you doing today?
Hey guys, it does, it feels good to chat to you again, I’ve missed you. I’m doing awesome thanks for asking.
MA: Lets start with a quick 101 on who Marc Young is? Where in SA are you from and how has music been a major influence in your life?
I’m a 26 year old from my home town of Pretoria the classic 012. Music has brought me from a place of emotional hardship and confusion to a constant state of happiness and isn’t that what it’s about? The feeling !! The emotion. Being able to play for people in my allotted hours and attach their emotions which I feel in that moment is something you can’t experience anywhere else.
MA: What are some of your musical influences/inspirations?
Well the obvious answer would be Black Coffee consistently for me. Since I started I watched him off peoples recordings on their phones on youtube. Watching his hand to see what and how he does it is what I focused on to have my advantage I have now. Also the mindset he has with what he’s doing for South Africa as a whole is a mindset I want to strive for.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
I feel we are still to close minded but with reason. Just the fact that we want to keep what we’ve worked for close to us instead of sharing it with everyone and bringing people on board means that you don’t get enough constructive criticism in order to build for the better.
MA: You are doing the very first Live Stream from a helicopter this Sunday… That’s freaking insane dude!! Can you give us a short background on this and what inspired you to want to do a Live Stream from the air?
Being able to do something completely brand new in South Africa and the industry in South Africa, never before heard or seen of is a major step for me and I couldn’t be more excited for this live stream to get under way. Months of planning and sweat is finally happening. The idea behind this came about when I thought why leave everything on the ground musically with performances when you have the entire sky above you to utilize and play with. People need to start looking up more and paying attention to what’s above them and with this stream not only drawing attention to the skies but also giving people a new direction for experience. Sadly no one can join me and the pilot but with the stream I aim to make you feel as close to me inside as possible. Facebook live is where I will be recording from.
LIVE STREAM: Marc Young _ From 5pm Today
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
Apart from the LIVE stream, last year one month ago I had the opportunity to perform in IBIZA Spain for 1 week, which was even bigger than a dream come true. Ibiza is an island known for music and the education through music and dance has a real special place in my heart ever since day 1. Apart from that, also performing at my first Earthdance festival, what an experience musically and emotionally. The love and respect from the people at the festival makes you feel at home, like nothing can go wrong.
MA: You will be playing at Trio Nova Vertigo 2.0 on the 13th October, excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
Very excited yes ! Ah well expect knowledge and happiness from me. I try to not only teach through my set but give happiness to you through emotion. Music creates an emotion that sticks with you forever and I do my best to bring that emotion out of you.
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
At the moment I’m focusing on building my streaming dream to feature the right genre specific artists and have them being recorded in the right environment location wise. I have a few locations that will blow your mind !!!!
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
