The wait is finally over, with the release of brand new material by MAJOZI. MAJOZI shot to fame in 2015 with the release of his single ‘Fire’, which was a major pop radio hit and his feel-good follow up single, Darling, which endeared MAJOZI to the hearts of his loyal fans nationwide. His debut SAMA nominated album Fire (which includes the #1 single Breathing as well as the hit collaboration with Tresor, The Woods.) was released in 2016 and ever since then, fans has been waiting patiently for new music from this Durbanite who is known to wear his heart on his sleeve.

“I really wanted to make sure this was the best music I’ve ever made, so I was never in a rush really, but I’m excited to be back and releasing new stuff now!” says MAJOZI.

The new release features a brand new radio single entitled WAITING, as well as a second song, Darling Pt. 2. Both songs were written around two years ago, but changed a lot over the years. For WAITING, MAJOZI was really inspired by Daft Punk and originally the song focused on finding hope in the face of feelings of inadequacy. Later MAJOZI got together with Brad Klynsmith (Gangs of Ballet) and evolved the song into a solid story dealing with relationships and love.

“I have always wanted to write a follow up to ‘Darling’, hence ‘Darling Pt. 2’ came to life. I also wanted to write a love song as good as Ed Sheeran without actually being in love, just to see if it was possible. It’s not.” laughs MAJOZI.

MAJOZI decided on a two-song-release because his music is heading in a new direction sonically than what fans have previous heard from him, and he wanted to ease them into it, bring them along on the journey and bridge the gap between the old and the new.

“I am ecstatic to finally release new songs and I really can’t wait for people to hear them; it’s been a while! The new songs still feature heart and vulnerability like my previous work, and anyone who is still figuring out life and love – which is pretty much everyone – will be able to identify with them.”

Hello dude, rad to be chatting again, how you doing?

Hey! It’s always good to chat, doing great, thank you!

Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who MAJOZI is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?

I’m Majozi. I love God, people and music. I’m originally from Durban but now I live in Cape Town. My debut EP made it to No. 9 on the iTunes Charts. I was luckily enough to have some friends help me out and get my first single – The River – play listed on radio; from there I got signed and that was really the start of my professional career.

Your debut album called FIRE was such an incredible album. Did this officially put you “on the map” in our local music scene?

Yes, I think Fire was really when things went up a notch to the next level. Few people knew me before but that album really help get my name out there, and I started playing more and more shows.

Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?

Opening for The Lumineers on their first SA tour was such an honour for me. I learnt so much from them and they were really nice and down to earth.

What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?

It’s really interesting at the moment.  All the bands and artists I know are really good. Sometimes it can be tough but I think if you work hard, think a little out the box  and are kind to people it can be a really enjoyable scene to be a part of.

Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?

Opposite The Other are really amazing, Ben Dey and the Concrete Lions are such a vibe as well. There’s actually too many for me to mention. Gemma Griffiths, Mike Wagnor. The list is deep.

You have recently released new music entitled WAITING, what can we expect from this release? Where can people get to hear your new music?

‘Waiting’ is the bridge between my old style and my new style. I’ve been trying to push myself creatively and try things that are still me at the core but presented in a different and more exciting way that represents where I am currently. It’s available on most the big streaming and download platforms.

Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?

Hopefully my next album will be out soon, busy working on that now. I’m excited for everyone to hear it. I have some other cool ideas for later in the year too but I’ll keep that a secret for now.
