[interview] Little Ringo – Catch them this weekend at Park Acoustics

Who Do We Think We Are!?

We’re an odd combination of personalities with a varying range of interests that somehow got brought together by our love for music.

We’re 4 boys from Pretoria that started playing together in 2016, each with our own influences and our own ideas of what music represents.

Our influences transcend most genres including pop, rock, hip-hop, punk, and jazz… so with our rhythm section rolling and punching, it creates the perfect platform for the saxophone and guitar to join the party. The harmonious relationship between the guitar, sax, and bass is lead by the vocal melody.

We’re best friends which have a major influence on our live performance. We’re like the Power Rangers doing that thing where they merge and become one big-ass Power Ranger Robot and destroy every bad vibe ever created.

We’re Little Ringo.

Interview: Little Ringo

MA: Hello gents, it’s rad to be chatting to you guys, how is everyone doing?

Hi! We’re doing fantastic thank you.

MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Little Ringo is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?

Little Ringo is an alternative guy with a whole lotta groove and he likes to make people feel confident and sexy. Some of us are from Johannesburg and some of us are from Pretoria, so that’s pretty much where we started asking around for gigs as soon as we got some songs together. We recorded a single, uploaded it to the online music platforms and shared the link with people/places that hosts/organises events, and so one gig led to the other and that’s pretty much how we got started in the scene…

MA: Where did you guys meet up to form the band?

Little Ringo is currently undergoing a transition/reshuffle…Only two of the original members (Niel and Dimitri) are still in the band, and they met 1st year in varsity where they played together in other projects.

We had two members that left(the bassist and drummer), luckily Janu, that was playing lead guitar, also plays bass. (Janu joined Little Ringo when he became friends with Niel at varsity where they study music together.)

Little Ringo ended up playing shows as a trio for a while:

(Niel – Guitar, vocals, and percussion; Dimitri – Saxophone and vocals; Janu – Bass).

But now, we finally decided to add a drummer – Mzamo Mtembu – this guy is fire! (also studies with Niel and Janu).

So yeah, we didn’t all meet up at once…

MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?

We’ve played at some pretty cool festivals and events, and we’ve been on some really cool lineups, but we’re still working our way up to our major highlights. We haven’t started running yet…  MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?

There’s some really cool stuff happening. All kinds of genres getting mixed, it’s great to see artists exploring different textures and flavours

MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?

Grassy Spark, Beatenberg, Hell Cats, We are Charlie…there are way too many

MA: You will be playing at Park Acoustics event this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?

Yeah! We are always super stoked to play at Parks. You can expect a completely different sound – Little Ringo V2.0 is coming in hot

MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?

We’re busy working on some new material that we’re planning on recording in October. It’s going to be a hip twist on what we’ve been doing.
