Just a passionate person making music to make a difference. It’s all art really. Don’t be shy, get in contact!
We are excited to be releasing our interview with singer/songwriter, LEANDRO, who is a young man from Johannesburg looking at making a difference with his music and humble personality. Coming off a month musical trip to the United States, where he got the chance to record some new material for his debut album at a renowned studio in New York.
The first single from the forthcoming album is called “Fire With Fire” and has just been releases. A tune that showcases Leandro’s vocal talents and giving you some idea of the sound you can expect from his music. We had a short chat with him recently, please be so kind to give it a read. Pass on to your friends once you have.
MA: Hey Leandro, how you doing? Excited to be featuring you on Mixed Apples.
Hey! Thanks so much for having me.
MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to Leandro Coimbra the musician? Where in SA do you come from? How did music become such a huge influence in your life?
First and foremost, I’m a singer/songwriter/producer that strives to create music that moves the soul – music that makes you feel. I’m from Johannesburg South, a place I like to think has exposed me to almost every genre of music one can think of. Be it in the house music played in clubs or the pop hits cycling on the radio stations I heard growing up: every genre of music I’ve been exposed to has without a doubt shaped my very own sound into what it is today.
MA: Has music always been a big part of your life growing up?
To be honest, it has most likely been the biggest part. At an early age, I was already being exposed to the likes of Queen, Beethoven, Duran Duran and many, many others. Looking back to when I started at 7, although I didn’t know it yet, I would later develop a passionate vision to replicate the same impact these bands and artists had, and still have on the world.
MA: What/Who are your musical inspirations?
Literally everything, and everyone. Good music is good music – so that’s easy. However, I listen specifically for music that stands out from the crowd: so that the inspiration I draw from it lends itself to my own songwriting skills. If I had to mention a few names I would go with One Republic, Adele & Hozier.
MA: I know that you have just come back from a short trip to America, where you worked on some music for your debut album, recording at a well renowned studio in the USA. Please tell us how that came about and how the experience as a whole was for you?
To keep things short, I met a producer during a competition I had entered that took place in New York in 2012. He happened to be one of the agents/scouts that took an interest in me at the time. After we exchanged details, we stayed in touch for 5 years before I was finally ready to move on to the next stage. I spent roughly 1 full week with him recording 10 songs that we thought were solid. It was without a doubt one of my best experiences to date. Seeing it all come together is really something amazing – it’s difficult to explain.
MA: What is the next process now? (after recording some music that side) Do you plan on going back there to complete the album?
We now plan to release a single at a time. Later, we’ll most likely compile all 10 singles into an album. Together with his connections in the USA and with my connections here, we plan on raising as much heat as possible. When I do go back there, it’s to sign a major record deal 😉
MA: We have gotten to listen to your single FIRE WITH FIRE, really nicely done dude! Are their certain songs that you are over-excited about releasing? Or is it more about completing your debut album first?
Thanks so much bro! And to answer your question, without a doubt. There are 2 or 3 that I’m most excited about, but the thing about this industry is that you never really quite know which one is really the one.
MA: I know that you were also involved in a duo called RO, with a couple of your tracks being played on the radio. Are you still involved with RO? Or are you now focused on your solo career?
Being part of the duo RO was a fantastic experience for me: an experience that taught me so much about my industry. Although it was a fun journey, it was always inevitable that I would eventually go solo. I hope this journey is just as riveting.
MA: How would you describe your “sound” in 5 words?
Catchy, but very soul-moving.
MA: What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment? Do you see yourself breaking into the local scene, or are you looking to venture overseas to see where you can go with your music internationally?
The craziest part about my music is that I write mainly for the international market. This is ultimately where I want to be. I want to compete with the likes of Maroon 5 or Adele, and to do this I need to be there. Although I respect and love the music scene back home, my ambitions will take me elsewhere. With that being said, I need to conquer South Africa first.
MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
We have heaps of talent back home, but for me, I think Monark are consistently writing songs of a high caliber.
MA: When can we expect a debut EP or album on the cards?
Realistically speaking, a year from now my full debut album will have been released. I just released my first single release ‘Fire With Fire’ will, which can be downloaded at: iTunes
MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?
You can find me on everything. My handles are as follows:
MA: Thanks for your time Leandro.
No, thank you! Till next time!
