MA: Hello Kobus… how you doing today?

Pretty fucking horrible actually. I burst the three bottom cushions in my spine and have a hell of a hard time getting around or even standing up straight, my jaw can’t open properly due to a bump on the left side of my skull obtained from a Benoni-after party, some of my teeth are falling out, my right leg is completely numb from the back injury pushing against the sciatic nerve, I have been on tour for ten years straight and have no money to show for it… all of that is completely true… also the doctor said these pills might make me grumpy.

MA: Before we get started, can you please give us a short background on Kobus De Kock the musician? Where in SA do you come from? How did you get involved in music?

I was born in the 80’s in KZN in a small town called Eshowe. I think my mother initially got me into music. She used to play some guitar for the church… after that, Kurt Cobain took over…

MA: Was music always an inspiration in your household growing up?

Not always. But it made me want it more…
MA: What were/are some of your musical inspirations?
Inspiration comes from EVERYWHERE and also constantly changes. What inspires you today might be gone and replaced tomorrow. But there’s always something. Right now for me it’s Springsteen, Igorrr, Hemingway, Red Wine, Story Cubes, Rust, Beer, Bjork, Big Rizlas, The seafood corner at Food Lovers, Ethiopian food, Knives, Guns, historical graves, walking, dry riverbeds, feathers, Tool, Puscifer, Pantera, Down, Pavarotti, Miracle Whip… the list goes on…

MA: What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?

Obviously there’s a lot that can be improved on, A LOT. But the worst thing I see local acts do is sit around and bitch about the fact that there’s nothing to be done. Like we’re stuck in this place and that’s just how it is. This is very wrong. It’s up to you as the artist to make things happen and to push yourself as far as you can. It’s up to you to create this ‘industry’. Go out there and FIND the venues/festivals/opportunities and if they’re not there… CREATE them. You have no excuse.

MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?

Feed the Wolf. Boargazm. Blynd Tyger. Medicine Boy. Akkedis. Wolfgang Marrow… there really are many beautiful acts out there currently.

MA: You are part of the incredible production called the Blood Brother, which brings some of South Africa’s best musicians together to form what you can call a “super group”. This must be something special for you and the others involved? Can you give us a bit more background on the Blood Brothers?

We prefer the term ‘ensemble’ rather than Super Group. It sounds somewhat superficial (no pun intended). The project was conceived in 2014 and with the help of some friends and the Vrede Foundation was launched in 2015. We’re now into our third year and happy to say that the project is going from strength to strength

MA: Which musicians make up the Blood Brothers in 2017?

This year it’s myself, Francois, Loandi, Garth, Jason H, Jason O, Jaco, Hanu, Chrissie, Albert and some guests…

MA: What can we expect from your shows this year?

Pure unadulterated rock and roll
MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?
This year, as in previous years we have written and recorded a special Blood Brothers track. Be on the look out for the single and video for the track “Breathe” coming soon.

MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?

MA: Thanks for your time guys…!!
Good Bye.
