This past Friday saw the official release of a brand new album by JUST JINJER, entitled EVERYTHING SINCE THEN. The album comes after the release of their self-titled international album in 2006, and the first single from the album, WONDERFUL WORLD, earlier this month. This week WONDERFUL WORLD also reached #1 on the iTunes SA Rock Chart.
Everything Since Then commemorates the band’s longevity. Inspired by a multitude of life experiences, their new body of work has been a year in the making and features authentic music resonating their signature messages of positivity and upliftment throughout the album. The album finally sees Just Jinjer feeling free enough to make music the way they want to.
The album was written and recorded between July and October 2015 at B# Studios in Benoni, the same studio where the band recorded their first album’s demos, and produced by Denholm Harding with input from the whole band.
“We owed it to ourselves and our fans to make a new album. We’ve been trying to do a new album for some years, but time goes by really quickly. For this album we were determined not be governed by any fears of old, so you will hear we were having a lot of fun. It’s always been about that.” – Ard Matthews.

Interview: JUST JINJER
MA: Hi guys… it is such a pleasure to be featuring you guys on the site!! Is everyone doing well today?
If I was any better I’d be twins!!
MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to the members of JUST JINJER??
Ard Matthews: Vocals and guitar
Denholm Harding: Bass and Vox
Brent Harris: Drums and Vox
MA: Would you mind giving us a quick 101 on JUST JINJER and how you guys came to together all those years back, to form one of SA’s best ever bands?
It was a stroke of luck that Brent and I happened to be playing in our respective cover bands just a few pubs away from each other at the Randburg Waterfront. We used to go watch each others sets in our breaks and quickly became fans of each another. Eventually we decided to join forces with a focus on writing original music and the rest is, well…
MA: Can you give us a short background on the name JUST JINJER?
We thought it had a similar connotation to “just dandy”, “just fine’ etc. An earlier sticker marketing campaign even said “everything’s Just Jinjer”
MA: Where do you guys take inspiration from in your “sound”?
I guess from each other and from all the music we have enjoyed over the years. The progression has been organic and natural to us so the sound is truly authentic to us.
MA: Has that ‘sound’ changed over the years? Or have you tried to stay true to the JUST JINJER sound?
We have incorporated quite a lot of electro elements simply because we like the way they sound, not to try keep up with any trends cos that would be futile given the ever changing nature of the business. The Jinjer sound and message will always there, through any tricks, bells or whistles.
MA: You have just released your latest Album, EVERYTHING SINCE THEN, after a seven year hiatus, and are also dropping a brand new album very shortly. What can we expect from this album?
The album is a 12 track journey of a collective expression of our journey thus far. We feel there is something on there for just about anyone so we hope it will make the impression we desire.
Life in general comes at you real fast and before you know it a lot of time can pass very quickly. We took some time out to identify who we were as individuals outside of the band which had defined us collectively and individually since the start. We believe the album has some magic to it because we honoured this process and learnt all we could from it.
MA: Our local scene has been growing positively over the past few years… What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment, seeing it almost from an outsiders perspective, since being away from the scene for some time?
The talent pool is overflowing in this country. We have never had so many class acts spilling forth from all genres as we do now. Unfortunately, the market has not grown with us, in fact there are far fewer people buying music than ever before so we certainly have our challenges. These days the bands that have the biggest chance of making a career out of music are the bands and artists who can deliver the live show the best.
MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
MA: Where can we get ourselves a copy of the album??
It was released on iTunes on Friday 20th November!
MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?
