MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Jackal & The Wind is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
Jackal & The Wind is a project that was started by 2 Brothers (Christopher Kruger and Peter Kruger) by just jamming together at home in Paarl. We later started a band called “Sydney Bartlett” named after one of our legendary High School teachers. The Band consisted of Chris (Rhythm Guitar and Vocals), Peter (Lead guitar), Cobus (Bass) and Nelius (drums).
Sydney Bartlett later changed their name to Jackal & the Wind after Chris wrote a song with the lyrics “Jackal & the Wind” in it and everyone agreed that it sounded unique. We began to get a cult following in and around Stellenbosch playing at University Residences and later got invited to bigger venues. We are currently based in Stellenbosch!
MA: Where did you guys meet up to form the band?
All the previous band members were in high school together but after a year or so, Nelius our drummer became really sick and the band took a little bit of a break. Sadly Nelius passed away shortly thereafter and that was devastating for the band. We met up with Johan Pretorius (a fellow High School friend) to fill in for the next few performances and eventually he stayed on. Cobus later quit the band and in came Alex Mayers (a friend of Johan).
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
One of our highlights is definitely playing the Main Stage Rocking the Daisies in 2017 but each one of us has a different highlight. Another highlight is playing Up the Creek 3 years in a row. We LOVE Up the Creek and it is always such an honour to perform there.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
To be quite honest, we feel that the local music scene has taken a bit of a knock over the past years but the future is looking promising with so many people actively supporting live music and new venues opening up, and let’s not get started on the amazing quality of music coming out these days! We are proud to be part of the scene!
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
If you want to go International, we have always been very big fans of The National, Paul Simon and the Milk Carton Kids. But honestly, every member of our band has a different taste in music and that makes it so exciting to incorporate all these different styles into a song.
Going Local, Erick Zulch Band, Androgenius, My Brother Einstein and Lady and the Cage are definitely some amazing bands to go check out!
MA: You will be playing at Park Acoustics event this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
We are SO excited for our performance at Park Acoustics! We have always wanted to play at this beautiful venue and we are so honored to be able to do so next weekend! We are pulling out all the stops and have a special Set List just for this performance. Get ready to SKUD!
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
We are currently in writing mode for our full-length album and we are testing out some new songs so maybe we will throw in a new one, maybe even two!
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
We are EVERYWHERE! Facebook, Instagram, Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest, Mxit, whatsapp…Okay we might have lied about a few of them, who knows.
