Interview: Hot Water
MA: Hello guys, its really cool to be chatting to you. How you doing?
Hey Nelson! Likewise! We’re awesome thanks! How’ve you been? 🙂
MA: Please give us a short into to who Hot Water is/are? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
HOT WATER is a Cape Town Afro-Pop band fronted by Donovan Copley that performs universally accessible, feel-good music to inspire soulful and fun dance vibes. We move people through music that reflects the spirit of South Africa. Hot Water effortlessly captivates, connects and lifts audiences locally and abroad.
MA: What are some of your musical influences?
Township Jive music, Mbaqanga, Maskanda, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Clegg, Paul Simon
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
When producing its Hollywood blockbuster film BLENDED, Warner Bros Entertainment needed a perfect song that would symbolise South Africa. The result was using Hot Water’s infectious song WAMKELEKILE as the movie soundtrack: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qd_9pbNEjX8
In the words of BLENDED producer Kevin Grady: “I really wanted to find a song that embodied South Africa, the film’s story and the journey of the characters within the [love] story. Wamkelekile not only does that, but it’s also a fun, catchy and playful song that people just love.”
Headline performances at some of the biggest international World and African Music Festivals over the last few years (including WOMAD UK, WOMAD SPAIN, Udaipur World Music Festival, INDIA, Africa Festival, GERMANY).
Being the first (and second) band to perform on top of Table Mountain.Shows at Robert Redford’s ranch in the US last month.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
We should make Dave Scott from The Kiffness the President of it.
Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
BCUC is thundering through the place and I love their fire. Jeremy Loops is carving up the international scene like a champ. Jack Parow continues to be a legend. The Kiffness is the bravest oke on the field.
MA: You will be playing at the 100th Park Acoustics event, later this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set
Happiness. Fire. South Africaness.
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in
A new album and bringing a layer of improvised comedy into the show.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time
