Biography:

Out of the big smoke of Johannesburg comes a young, creative and passionate DJ. Headphase has developed and refined a sound which he shares throughout South Africa’s club, festival and radio circuit.

Influenced by the UK Garage movement and the world of underground electronic music, Headphase has developed a sound which goes against the grain in a surprisingly pleasant way, that is guaranteed to make you move. Priding himself on underground music and cutting edge sounds, be sure to arrive with an open mind to hear something new and exciting.

2011 saw Headphase explode onto the club scene in Cape Town with his unique style and energetic performance, sharing the stage with many of SA’s choice electronic acts such as Haezer, Sibot, Das Kapital, Pascal & Pearce, Niskerone, Goldfish, Dean Fuel and many more. 2012-2014 expanded this trend as Headphase explored and shared the sound that he endorses on the festival front at festivals such as Rocking The Daisies, Earthdance, Synergy, Rezonance, RAMfest and One World, as well as on the airwaves through 5FM, Assembly Radio, MuthaFM and UCT Radio. 2015-2016 has seen Headphase move back to Johannesburg and mature as a DJ, as he continues to take all listeners on an open-minded exploration of his sound. He has made his mark as a resident of the Hot On Top crew, playing to crowds at some of Joburg’s finest rooftop and outdoor venues.

Interview:

MA: Hey dude, how you doing? Awesome to be chatting to you today..

Hey Mixed Apples team, I’m super! Thanks for looping me in.

MA: Before we get started, can you please introduce us to Headphase, tell us where in SA you come from and how you got into music?

My Headphase alias is a creative outlet for me to showcase the electronic music that I love. I grew up in Joburg, but established myself in the Cape Town club and festival circuit in my formative DJ years, before moving back to Joburg a couple of years ago. Music has been close to me for many years, I played drums in a number of Jazz and Alternative Rock bands at school, stayed close to music theory and have always been a collector of electronic music of many different types. I guess all of these things lead me to where I am today musically.

MA: Where do you take inspiration from in your “sound”?

The UK Garage movement of the early 90’s has always been a major source of inspiration for me. In recent years, there have been a number of revivals of the sound in different shapes and forms, which you can hear in a lot of the House and Techno music that I play.

MA: Our local scene has been growing positively over the past few years… What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?

Our electronic music scene in SA is certainly a thing of beauty. I’m inspired by the constant surge of DJ’s, live acts, producers, promoters, venues, festivals and bookers – all doing great things. What I would like to see more of, though, is collaboration between these different people and the inherent ‘cliques’ that tend to emerge. I feel that this will move us closer to a true South African cross-pollination of music and music lovers.

MA: Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?

Some of my friends in the scene are doing amazing things. I recently played a B2B set with Trancemicsoul, a rising star who has just launched a new concept event in PTA free to the public. The Kiffness is on the brink of releasing a new album featuring the talent of Moonchild Sanelly. Ryan Murgatroyd, Floyd Lavine, Christian Tiger School and Stab Virus are all making waves in Europe as we speak. Mike Kelly is putting in the studio hours for some of the cleanest deep house music in the country. Behr is one of most talented and exciting live electronic music arrangers on the scene (and my old drum teacher!). And a final shout out to my Hot On Top family of residents who always deliver the good vibes.

MA: You are playing alongside Miki San at the next Park Acoustics. What can we expect from you guys?

My collaboration with Miki is a long-overdue piece of musical magic. We have done a number of shows together this year and each has been a uniquely captivating experience. At Park Acoustics, you can expect Miki’s silky voice accompanied by some easy sunset grooves. Don’t be shy to shake those hips. 😉

MA: Anything that you guys are currently working on that we would be interested in hearing about?

We have a ‘Headphase ft. Miki San’ mix in the works. We’re really excited to put this one out there. Miki is releasing his debut album ‘Aurelius’ next month with a 3-city launch tour. There are also some exciting shows and tours in the pipeline for both of us.

MA: Where can we follow you on Social media?

You can find me across Soundcloud, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc.
You can probably find Miki on MySpace and MXit. 😉

MA: Thanks for your time guys…!!

Thank you Mixed Apples and we’ll see you at Park Acoustics!
