Roger D’lux is a name that has been in the industry for almost 20 years now, playing all over the country and doing magic work for our local music scene. He has owned record labels (still does), played the biggest events and festivals in SA and been in production from as early as when he start. Over the years his music has changed and moulded into what he was feeling at that time and how the industry had evolved, but with one common denominator; an ear for quality tunes and a way to get your ass moving. We are very honoured to have had the opportunity to sit down with Roger, discussing his musical journey and the upcoming gig at Trio Nova: GARDENS OF HOUSE. This is what he had to say:
MA: Hey there Roger, how you doing? Its awesome to be chatting to you!!
Thank you for the opportunity.
MA: Before we get started, do you mind introducing yourself, telling us where you are from and giving us a short background on how you got started in music?
Ok so my name is Roger de Sousa AKA Roger D’lux – got that name for being able to do turntabilsm and play many underground styles of house and breaks. Im originally from Preoria, lived in JHB for 10 years and currently in Cape Town. Ive been djing since 1996, producing since 1998 and a label owner since 2008.
MA: You have been in the industry for a very long time, starting off playing vinyl and even having your own record label, to now being one of the biggest names in the industry and now moving down to Cape Town. What have been some of the biggest challenges in your career thus far?? How have you see things change over the years?
I guess its staying relevant and up to date with the new emerging trends in music… One must adapt to what the market is enjoying while still expressing yourself as an artist and to pioneer new sounds and technics that will help the industry thrive. The crowds are getting younger and liking different things…. the dance culture is so different to what it was when i was starting out… in actual fact the industry today lacks a lot of things that helped make this industry today… its all about stats and who markets the best etc… its no longer about who is good at what they do and how much they put into the industry… Anyone can be a dj today… but not everyone can be a good dj…
MA: How would you describe your style of music?
Tech house with deep and jacking elements.
MA: What are some of your musical inspirations and influences?
Wow… there are so many, but i would say currently the German underground scene is where its at… they are providing sick events, djs, labels and artists that are truly gifted…
MA: Our local deep house music scene has been growing in such a big way lately, what do you think are the positives at the moment and the reasons for the massive new appreciation for deep house in SA??
We all respond to the beat of any drum… no matter what colour we are we all Africans in some way… deep house allows us to express our musical urges… Deep house is soulful… we are a nation of empathy and we all believe in a greater good..; Music frees up that will and love… we are a dance nation!
MA: Can you give us a few of your highlights of 2014?
I’m currently working on an album that s due for release early next year
MA: What track/Album are you pumping in your car these days?
Funny you ask… all of the Diynamic Podcasts – Proper German Deep house with techno influences.
MA: You are one of the acts playing at the Trio Nova presents: GARDENS OF HOUSE on the 1st November… Are you excited for this and what can we expect from your set?
Oh Yes!!! Can’t wait in fact… Back to my origins to show my people what i have learned over the years… Hopefully everyone will come with open minds and hearts and listen to what this country has to offer at an international level.

Currently just focusing on the album as it has been my dream.
MA: Where can we follow you on social media?
MA: Thank you so much for your time, see you at Trio Nova…
