GANGS OF BALLET Releases New EP
FORM & FUNCTION PART 2

Today sees the release of the brand new EP by Durban exports GANGS OF BALLET, entitled FORM & FUNCTION PART 2. This EP comes after the release of PART 1 in October 2015.

The band originally wrote over 40 tracks for Part 1, being in the enviable position of cherry picking the best of the batch for the first 6 track EP in the series. From this creative soup, they then had a head start for Part 2 from the tracks that didn’t make it onto the first EP. They went on to write around 20 new ideas, then recorded the ones they loved the most from the collection.

PART 2 was self-produced by the band and recorded at Echoes Studios in Durban by Brendan ‘Rusti’ Rossouw in February 2016. Not bound by any rules, the band focused on distilling the ‘feel’ of each song and creating material that would leave a lasting emotional effect after listening to it.

“It’s interesting to see how you change in a year in life, in terms of musical influence and what songs you produce. So we always knew you would hear that progression between the two parts. Part 2 is a little more musical and indulgent; it’s still electronic in textures but it certainly feels like we pushed ourselves a little more on this one,” says Brad Klynsmith, singer of the band.

The band felt that wearing both the ‘artist‘ and ‘producer‘ hats was a significant step, especially as they were still finding their feet with the songs in studio. Not ones to take the easier route for the sake of it, the band decided to back themselves and gave the production a go, with magnificent results.  Although noticeably a progression from their earlier work, the EP features the signature elements of GANGS OF BALLET: powerful songs, heartfelt performances, inspiring production and arrangements and a few choruses that you can already tell you’ll be singing along to at their next show.

Interview: GANGS OF BALLET

  • Sup gents… how you doing? Been a little while since we last spoke… How has 2016 been treating you guys thus far? Any notable performances or experiences to tell us about?
– yeah it’s been really fun with a dash of unfortunate happenings. We were in studio in February and we loved the whole experience but strange things like our mix engineer in London went temporarily deaf in his right ear just before mixing our tracks. Luckily everything bad this year has ended really well so we’re really pumped about life at the moment.
  • We believe that you guys are coming out with your latest EP, Form & Function Part 2? What can we expect from this EP??
– it’s again a departure from what we’ve done and we’ve really focused on what the tracks feel like when you listen maybe more than what the tracks actually are. So the new tracks are fresh sounding for us and the overall feel of the collection is light and up beat.
  • What was the reaction from the release of Form & Function Part 1 late last year?
– people have been so rad to us and that included the radio stations. They’ve play listed and charted tracks and we sincerely appreciate every single play!
  • Are there any notable collaborations on this EP?
– nah not for this one but we got a few tricks up our sleeves…
  • What are your thoughts on our local music scene at the moment and if there is anything you wish to see happen differently?
– I’m loving it, there’s some really great urban artists out at the moment and blowing my mind.
  • Are there any local acts that you think need a special mention?
All my Durban boys making moves- Edisontide- Easy Freak- Josh Wante.

  • Thanks for your time guys…!!
