Interview: DJ Melitia
MA: Hello dude, how are you doing today?
I’m good thank you, It’s Monday so back into work mode after an amazing weekend.
MA: Let’s start with a quick 101 on who DJ Melitia is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
I am from JHB originally but studied in Cape Town. I started DJ’ing literally after my 21st birthday and became the DJ for Hog Hoggidy Hog as the in-between bands DJ ( which wasn’t even a thing back then) and played and toured with the band for 10 years. Lee Thomson has been a huge influence in my life going forward as a DJ and music industry associate.
MA: What have been some of the major highlights in your musical career thus far?
Obviously, the epic times I had with Hogs are an absolute highlight, I love them so much and they have been so good to me, they are family. Then I DJ’d for Jack Parow a couple of times and in front of 10,000 people. I also opened for Yelawolf with SilvaBlack 2 years ago.
Well, I run Sofar Sounds JHB, so I think the genre variety and talent we have in SA is very impressive. I do think that the bands or artists that have the best attitude win, being humble and kind will always get you further, people with big ego’s and ridiculous expectations need to take a chill. I’ve also seen SA artists transcend borders more than ever in the past few years ie Africa Express.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Ah, Fuzi, you are my JHB punk family, we have lived an entire life together. Thank you. Also, George Bacon from Hog’s, a legend gone to soon, so much love for you and the music you created, think of you all the time. Also, Slashdogs, you guys are tough as nails and really speak to the punk ethos of taking politics and corrupt governments to task, never stop calling those people out and educating the kids.
MA: You will be playing at a Park Acoustics on the 5th May…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
I look forward to one of the best get together’s where all the OG’s pull in alongside the younger kids, it’s going to be a reunion! You can expect to hear a mix of all the old skool punk tracks since the early 90’s up to now, I have compiled over 15 years of punk rock playlists and curated something special, nostalgic and super fun! Can’t wait to shake some hooves!
Sofar Sounds JHB, check that out. As well as some exciting live-streaming work that I do with Skyroomlive.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
MA: Thanks for your time. Only a pleasure 🙂
See you on Saturday on the dance floor!
