I love it was I get to meet new artists in the industry that have as much love and passion as what I do, which was the case with these two gentlemen. DeepSouls is a Jozi based DJ/Production duo who have been turning heads and making people dance, doing it all with open hearts and big smiles. Their music has elements of deep, soulful house with driving baselines to get your ass shaking. Also involved in event production, these cats are definitely on the move and doing it with swag. Catch them this Friday at their own event, ITS A DEEP THING, as well as on Friday at Arcade Empire, for NO CURFEW presents: ITS A HOUSE PARTY. Lets get to know them a bit better with this short interview:
Hello Hi! We are well thanks. Thank you for having us.
MA: Before we get started, do you mind giving us a bit of background on how/where you guys met each other and how you guys came together to form Deep Souls?
We met through friends really at around the back end of ’09, just after matric for us and we were partying a little too often haha, so through being around each other we started realising how much we actually had in common especially our taste in music and at the time it was all about fidget and we were the only two in our group of friends that always drifted towards the smoother soulful music as a result of our backgrounds growing up.
DeepSouls came about when we realised how much music we had and we just wanted people to hear it, so we decided to become disk jockeys.
MA: Has it always been “musically” how you guys have connected?
Yeah you could say that, but as mentioned above we have aloooot in common. Music is one of the main ways that we have connected though.
MA: Would you say that your styles compliment each other?
Yes definitely, that’s the main fabric of our duo. We like to think that we’re on the same wavelength with everything, especially our music.
MA: Where do you guys take inspiration from, in your ‘sound’, locally or internationally??
We draw inspiration from alot of artists, but mostly Andre Lodemann, Mano Le Tough, Atjazz and Sven Weisemann.
MA: 2014 was quite a busy year in general for the SA music scene, especially the house scene… What were some of your favourite moments from last year?
Last year was definitely a massive one for us, there are three major highlights though, firstly was releasing one of our tracks – Nostalgia on Just Move Record’s VA motion Sampler alongside some heavy weights. Secondly was playing at HK009 at Capital Music Cafe and finally, the big one was getting the chance to play at Antiquated Souls – Soul Control, really seemed unreal. Still can’t believe it happened for real haha.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene currently & where do you think it can still improve?
The industry is growing at a rapid pace, and it can only get better. The main thing we think could improve is the cohesion within the industry. Work together for the greater good and we will all prosper.
MA: Any amazing new artists hit the scene that you think needs a special mention?
These aren’t new artists by any measure, but we have to mention Cody Blanc; the smooth operator, Shelo; The production mastermind, House Mobb our Chinas and definitely Miguel Tavares whose always been somewhat of a motivation source and a role model.
MA: You guys will be rocking PTA & Arcade Empire for the first time this Saturday, 4th April. Are you excited to be coming to Pretoria for this one and what can we expect from your set?
Shoowee we are too excited!! It’s our first time playing outside of JHB, so we’re nervously excited for it. You could expect a lot of soul and groovy basslines, maybe one or two of our new projects as well (Winks).

MA: You are also up next on our Ibiza Live Radio Show (Tuesday, 31 March). You guys amped for the world to hear your mix? Which is totally incredible BTW!!!
Haha Thank you so much, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah we are truly excited to showcase what DeepSouls are about and how we’ve matured musically, and all we want is for the world to hear us out. Again, thank you for the opportunity.
MA: Lets not forget that besides performing as a duo together, you are also part of a few events in Jozi, one which is ITS A DEEP THING, happening this Friday 3rd April. Please tell us a bit more on the events side of things and what we can expect this year from you guys??
We started with our events in 2013, and we’ve been going strong since. It is a long process and we learned that the hard way, but the main thing is that we learned. We are hoping to do a few more creative things when it comes to our events and should be joining a few lads for something a lot more intimate. With It’s A Deep Thing we have partnered up with a couple of gents with a bit more experience in the field and it has helped. Friday will be a special one with the Revamped Flyboys, now dubbed The Runway.
MA: Are there any other projects that you are working on that we might be interested in hearing about?
We have been focusing on the production side of things quite intensely and hopefully soon we’ll have a few releases flying. Lookout for that.
MA: Where can we follow you on social media?
MA: Thanks for your time, see you in PTA this weekend 😀
Thank you for having us! We are bringing the heat this Saturday!!!!
