Getting the chance to make you dance this weekend is COCKLES. Lets get to know these rad gents with a short chat with their frontman…
Relatable with a smidge of quirk, the lyrics are all about how life ain’t easy, but no one likes a little bitch. What’s the name of that movie where tom hanks is a kid in an adult’s body? Kinda like that, with equal parts 90s nostalgia and questionable style.
Cockles will warm your heart.
MA: Hello dude, how you doing? Its super rad to be chatting to you!!
Hello. I, too, am overwhelmed with joy.
MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Cockles is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?
I’m al. I also play in a band called Shortstraw, who are currently on hiatus, so Cockles is a bit of a solo / side project. I am from Joburg and I started from the bottom and now i’m here, starting from the bottom again.
MA: What are some of your musical influences?
I like to believe that i’m influenced by whatever i’m listening to around the time of writing a song, so it’s pretty diverse. Got a bit of Bright Eyes, The Shins and Courtney Barnett on the folkier side, then stuff like FIDLAR, Twin Peaks and Cloud Nothings on the opposite end of the spectrum, but I just try and write relatable lyrics over major chords really.
Happy music for sad people.
MA: I believe that you are/were the front man for epic local band Shortstraw, is this correct?
Epic is a strong word. I’d go more for something like ‘persistent’.
MA: Is this a side project that you started as something different, or will Cockles be your main focus?
Ja kinda. With Shortstraw we all write the songs together, so I wanted an opportunity to do all the writing myself and see how it went. While Shortstraw is on hiatus it’ll be my main focus, but next year there’ll be a bit of juggling.
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
I think there are some great bands around at the moment, especially from Cape Town, but we’re starved for decent venues to play at and crowds don’t dig paying more than 50 bucks to watch a band, so it makes touring pretty tough. You know, we keep on trucking. If we all stick together and fight it out, I reckon we’ll be okay. None of this cliquey bullshit where some bands think they’re better than other bands, we’re all in the same boat and we need to unify, otherwise we’ll all struggle. Thank the pope for events like Park Acoustics too, because it gives all deserving bands a massive opportunity to perform to awesome crowds..
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Runaway Nuns, Brynn, Twin Weaver, Bam Bam Brown, Miagii
MA: You will be playing at Park Acoustics event this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
You bet i’m excited! The audience can expect to hear some songs they’ve probably never heard before, considering this’ll only be our second time playing in Pretoria, but hopefully it results in a good time had by all.
I’m in the process of recording the debut Cockles album that is due for release later this year. There’ll be another video or two before that comes though. I recently cut out dairy. umm… i’m trying to write a screenplay, the usual.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
ooh, please follow me!
