Charlie Finch is a singer-songwriter from South Africa. His sound is a refreshing, positive blend of percussive guitars, folk-pop vocals, and electronica undertones. Charlie performed countless hours as a resident musician to help fund his bachelor degree in music (BMus) at NMMU, after graduating he became a full-time musician performing around P.E. and the surrounding Eastern Cape areas, which later lead to him performing in Europe.

His hard work started to get noticed throughout PE and Eastern Cape, and in 2016 he recorded his debut album “Life’s Journey” with the help of Little Big Studios, shortly before moving permanently to Johannesburg to pursue music as his career.

Finch has become a fan favourite with his two hit singles “If I Ever Let You Down” and “Stay the Winter” and released his debut album “Life’s Journey” digitally on 22 September 2017.

Both hit singles are available on the album along with eight more incredible tracks, giving fans a 10-track soundtrack to Finch’s life so far.

It’s been a long journey for Finch and the release of his album is the highlight for him. “I’ve been looking forward to releasing this album for so long and now the day is finally here. I’m honestly just so excited for people to hear it and see what their favorite songs are. It’s hard for me to say which are my favorite songs on the album as I feel like all of them are a part of me. I really love ‘Elaine’ as it was quite a significant moment in my life that I was writing about, and the song always brings back so many memories.”

“Life’s Journey” is a debut collection of perfection. With tracks such as the hauntingly beautiful opener “Into The Woods”, hit singles “Stay the Winter” and “If I Ever Let You Down”, and highlight tracks “No Escape”, “Growing Up” along with the album title track “Life’s Journey”, Finch has poured his heart and soul into this record.

The song writing process saw Finch draw a lot from his life, grabbing moments and creating them into songs. Some came quick and the others took ages to develop. Finch explains further, saying “The songs all usually stem from a moment in my life that stands out and then I would just sit down with a guitar or a piano and start writing. Sometimes the songs just poured out in a very short amount of time and other times I only ended up finishing a song years later.”

Finch’s debut album is as close to his life’s journey as listeners can experience and it’s a “Life’s Journey” worth hearing.

“No Escape” is the 3rd single from the album released 26 January 2018 to radio.

MA: Hello Charlie, really cool to be chatting to you, how you doing?

Hi there, Im doing very well thanks for asking.

MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Charlie Finch, the musician, is? Where in SA are you from and how did you get started in the music scene?

Well, I was born in Port Elizabeth into a very musical family and ended up studying a Bachelor of Music at NMU. I’ve enjoyed writing music and performing since high school but I only really started considering being a full time musician towards the end of my degree. After University I recorded my debut album ‘Life’s Journey’ which is comprised of songs I had written throughout my life and in 2017 I launched the album on all major digital platforms. In 2017 I also moved up to Johannesburg where I currently reside.

MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?

There have been a couple really cool moments in my career so far, the biggest highlight probably being the SAMA nomination of my album ‘Life’s Journey’, which I received this year.

Another highlight was when my first single hit the radio; and while every time I launch a new single it is awesome to hear them getting picked up by the radios the first time will definitely remain my favorite memory.

MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?

South Africa has very diverse music scene with a lot of talented musicians which they should be really proud of.

MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?

I think SA is full of musicians making a great mark on the music industry but I’d definitely like to mention Gangs of Ballet who are currently on their final tour. They’ve made some incredible music over the span of their career.

MA: You will be playing at Park Acoustics event this month…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?

I’m definitely keen to be playing at Park Acoustics its an incredible event. I like to keep the live set vibey so come prepared to sing along and dance with us.
