Interview: APPLE GULE
MA: Yo Apple, you well dude? Been a minute, how you doing?
Yo!!! Whatsup. I am so well thank you. I am doing pretty good though ey, been a crazy few months of shows and touring, it’s so amazing that I get to call this my job.
MA: Do you mind starting with a quick 101 on who Apple Gule is and where in SA are you from?
Well firstly your boy Apple Gule isn’t from SA, I am actually from Swaziland from a small village called Nkaba. I am so proud of where I am from and I don’t know if you’ve noticed all over my social media I post about it a lot. But who am I, well I am a lot of things but in the music scene I am a man who has the gift of singing really well and writing really good songs.
MA: What are some of your musical influences, growing up and now as an artist?
I am probably the biggest John Legend fan and was listening to him from when I first discovered Soundcloud and that was many moons ago. I just dig his vibe and I tried to mimic hi so much as a young gun. Right now I am all about the new wave and I am trying to be a part of that. I get so many influences from so many artist but defo what I am bumping right now is Masego, 6LACK, Shane Eagle, Kyle Watson, Crazy White Boy, Una Rams and….. Yeah.
MA: Do you have any major highlights in your musical career thus far?
I guess there are a couple just because every achievement is usually bigger than the last the more I can carry on. I would say there 3 major ones so far in my career. The massive collabs that I have done with Watson – Which has more than 1 million views on Youtube – and also the collab with Crazy White Boy. The other massive one is just all the big festivals I have been able to perform at and with Park Electric being a major highlight in my life, ooouu I did Oppikoppi too and that was wild. And the third one you’ll have to wait a few weeks for that one (Wink Wink)
MA: What are your thoughts of our local music scene at the moment?
I honestly think it’s amazing. It lost a bit of fire a few years ago in my eyes but now I think with heat that people are bringing out again and all the amazing mix of festivals and shows on offer it’s definitely an exciting time to be an artist – of any genre. I think we are just embracing each other more. One thing I will say though is that we need to give more and more new artists a shot, there is so much talent out there, like sooooo much.
MA: Any acts/bands/artists that you think need a special mention?
Most def, there are two artists right now who for me are just doing the absolute most. I mean I have many artists/bands who I think need shout outs but I have to mention these two. They are Shane Eagle and Kyle Watson. These two gents are just doing so much for SA right now, making international moves too. I mean I love Black Coffee who is arguably the biggest SA artist in our current generation but the other two guys are just so inspiring too.
MA: You will be playing at the first Park Electric, in Pretoria…. Are you excited for the gig? What can we expect from your set?
I am hella excited for the first Park Electric, it’s going to be such a party!!! I am a firm believer of “the people want to hear what you’ve given them”. So I am gonna sing my hits and also throw in some of my new material coming up soon soon. Also, I like to sound the exact save live as I do in my recordings.
MA: Anything else you currently working on that we may be interested in?
I have just signed a pretty huge deal with a major label, this deal was months in the making and I am so excited. I can’t reveal yet but it will in due time. All I can say my new single is on it’s way and it’s a banger.
MA: Where can people follow you on Social Media?
You can find me on Instagram on @AppleGule, Twitter also on @AppleGule and on Facebook just type in APPLE GULE.
