You might be familiar with the name Charl Steyn, as we did a feature on him a few months back, chatting about his amazing skills on a skateboard. This time we would like to showcase his other passion, which is art and design. This young man is unbelievably talented with pen, pencil, paintbrush or tattoo gun at hand! He has a passion for distinctive art pieces and this interview helps to get to know him a little better, hope you enjoy:
Good day there! I am doing wonderful, thank you very much..
MA: We did a feature on you as a skateboarder recently, please give a some background on your artistic and design skills…
Well, since a very young age I have always liked all kinds of arts. From trying to draw all my mom’s little ornaments to just trying to create something from little things I had around the house. My dad used to show me a few drawing techniques when I was small and I guess it just stuck. I never had art as a subject at school but I always loved doing it. When I was about 20 I decided I wanted to do graphic design so I did that correspondence for 2 years and I just followed my passion from there. I have always been a bit more of a pen and paintbrush kind of guy so a few of my friends actually suggested that I should try and get into the tattooing business. I got a lot of support from my family and friends, I practised on some silicone skins and grapefruits and it felt so good doing it. That was when I realised I want to do this for the rest of my life.
MA: What is your main business focus?
At the moment I do quite a few tattoos and do a lot of custom tattoo designs for people. It takes up a lot of my time but I never complain about it. It is way better than a 9 to 5 office job.
MA: What inspires you in your design work and drawings?
There is a lot of artists out there with some mad skills and it is always inspiring to see what others do and just use simple ideas, putting them together to create something of your own, but my main focus is to be unique in what I do. To draw or design or paint something that no one has come up with. I have used a lot of music in what i do and people’s personalities can also be used to create something unique.
MA: Can you please design us a rad Mixed Apples inspired tattoo one day, hehe?
Ain’t nothing but a thang!!!hahaha
MA: I believe you have had some of your art displayed at Park Acoustics this year? How did that go?
Yeah, that was actually the first little exhibition I have ever done and it was nerve wrecking. I was so afraid that people thing my work sucks hahahaha. At the end of the day it went well. I sold some stuff and the feedback I got was awesome. Another exhibition coming soon so keep your eyes peeled! hahaha
MA: To date, what has been your best achievement?
Just doing what I love every single day. Not a lot of people have the privilege to do what they love and that is probably one of my biggest fears, to live an unhappy life.
MA: Are you working on any other projects that we might be interested in?
So far it is me, my skateboard, art, family and the coolest lady in the world. I want to see the world and just be as happy as possible. Also working on a new video part with the Plankie and Dope Industries guys so keep an eye out for that.
MA: Where do you see yourselves in 5 years time career wise?
Just keep on doing tattoos, designs and Illustrations and progress as much as possible so I can give the best art that I can possibly give. Don’t want to limit myself and I want to keep on pushing forward
MA: Where can people follow you guys?
